I am saddened to report that the magic community has suffered yet another loss with the passing of Ali Bongo this morning. "Shriek of Araby," You will be missed.

He was a friend of mine. I can't say much more than that, because it is too painful.

He performed at my first "It's Magic!" show in Los Angeles. He was a fantastic performer and will be sorely missed. What a sad day for all of us.

Another legend lost...a sad day indeed.
Magic is an art. I am merely a tour guide.

All the times I got to hang out with him, I was always too afraid to ask him to pose for a picture with me.
May he (and the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God,) rest in peace. |

I remember reading his section in Genii as a kid. He sounded like a wonderful man. His writing inspired me and kept me moving through the rough patches in magic.

A terrible loss for magic and entertainment. He was also one of the nicest guys around. I'll miss him greatly.

I met the man only once. He was one of my judges at IBM Reno 2005 and said only one thing to me "Big Daddy Cool is bloody brilliant..." and then some one snatched him away before we could talk more. I wish I could have known him more.

I was hoping beyond hope that he would overcome the stroke...this is such sad news.
I got to finally meet Ali 1:1 at the IBM/SAM convention last year. I was invited to join a table of UK magi and their significant others at the banquet (most likely because I was in Highland Dress and they mistook me for a "real" Scot). I was seated right next to Ali...he was a sparkling conversationalist with a wonderful, dry wit. He even tried out a new packet trick on me. Rest in peace, Ali. Make heaven laugh. |

A great magician, a great magical mind, and very generous with his time and expertise. Surely in his case more than any other it is appropriate to say, 'There was only one, and there could never be another like him'. A great loss.

It was always wonderful to see him at conventions. And, luckily for us, he attended many. Forever cheerful and friendly. And never once did I see any of the ugly "big name" arrogance or imperiousness that tarnishes so many celebrity magicians these days. Physically, he was slight; as a personality, he was colossal. Totally first class.
Funny and fun-loving, sharp, inventive, clever, and affable, it will take years for us to fully catalog and appreciate all that he contributed to the magic world. Without question, it was one of the greatest privileges of my life in magic to have met and talked with him. Travel well, Ali B. We're forever grateful. |
