Huge topic.
Too big to answer in one post. First part - you will have constant turn over. Accept it and move on... |

I was able to hire 4 girls from a local high school to help with the show. They are all pals and hang out together and are all involved in various sports. The majority of the shows I really only need 1 girl, but usually hire 2 so they can hang out together at the show. I always try my best to make it fun for them. We do rehearse a lot, but as fate would have it something will go wrong during the show. I always let them know that every once in a while we all make mistakes, and usally it's me that makes them. But when one of them do mess up I never get mad at them, They know they messed up and already feel bad about. I always rotate the girls so all 4 get equal shots at shows. When I first hired the girls they were about 16. Now they are all in thier early 20's and in collage. They all still enjoy being in the show. 2 examples of how much they enjoy performing : one time one of the girls broke her wrist and dislocated a knee in a basketball game the night before a show. She still insisted that I let her help the next morning. Another time a girl had a throat infection so bad she had to go to the emercency room for it. Later that day we had a large show out of town, they was no way I could talk her out of doing the show. ( the infection was not contagious ). One other thing I always did when they were younger and we had a show that required us to stay the night somewhere was to make sure one the parents came along with us. From the sounds of things I think I really lucked out with the assistants I have.
Good luck, Bob. |

If you work long enough you could have some turnover as people get too old or move up in a career. On the other hand I've had assistants for years! I try and create a very cool workplace and pay them well when they earn it. I've also had a few in my career that I let go after one show. The more of a "day labor" feeling you create in a position, the less loyalty it will instill. If you're getting a couple of HS girls to help out in a show, yes, you're bound to have constant turn over as they grow up, get real jobs and move on. If you're hiring professional entertainers to help you, they will work more consistently to the degree you're able to keep them well employed. Train them well, pay them well and keep them if they are good.

Loyal R, Yes!have your assistants sign a confidentiality agreement/contract not to give out secrets.assistants meaning the (female) you will use in your illusions,(males) that will be helping you haul, load and unload your props as well.
but regardless if they sign an agreement or not,it's just a formality.if they want to give out secrets, they will do it anyways and no one can stop them. |

I have always signed contracts. It's a very important aspect of the confidentiality bond between the magician and the assistant, as well as protecting both parties legally.
