This is really quite an astonishing trick for laymen and defies explanation.
I have the German-made version and it's impressive. |

Bill,
Thanks for posting the pic. I saw one like that on ebay a while back and was not sure what it was. Looks like that might be another method than others being made now or in the past. Thanks for all the great info you bring to the forum, you are a wealth of know how and information. If you have anymore info on the prop I would love to hear about it. Gimpy

No more info on the old U.F. Grant version, found it on the Internet by accident. As most of the people that purchased Grant magic, he was never sneaky in his methods, but they all worked as described in his ads. I am sure it did not work as all the versions being made today.

The U. F. Grant called his version "1-2-3 Blocks" (surprise, surprise). It worked pretty much the same way some of the earliest versions worked. I think O'Dowd later put them out called "Gemini Blocks" (same methodology, same number of blocks, same trick).

I think 3 blocks would be better than the stack of six.

The Grant version was very much a living room/parlor trick.
Jay Leslie has short stack versions (many different sizes) that work well in small venues.

Check out other threads on this effect.
The only thing wrong with this effect is the suggested patter line .. when you get a story line that makes sense and fits your character it is a grand effect. My set is from the 40's and works just fine

Shortly after I got my German-Made Cuba Lubre set from Hocus Pocus, I contacted my friend David Seebach who has done this routine for years and he graciously sent me his routine.
Granted, I have not seen every working magician's routine for this trick, but David's routine is simply outstanding. David uses an assistant for this trick, so the routine is designed and written that way and I work without an assistant, so I'm working through the logistics. Based on my (somewhat limited) knowledge of the dynamics of this trick, there are probably two main considerations for what routine a magician will want to use: 1. The construction of the prop will dictate the mechanics of the trick, and thus, in turn, the "sequence" of "moves". 2. Once the decision is made on what specific Cube A Libra prop you want to buy, the next consideration would be whether or not you work with an assistant. Once 1 and 2. above are decided on, THEN would be the starting point for the routine you would want to design for YOUR persona. I honestly believe that this is a MAGNIFICENT magic trick.......and it deserves a MAGNIFICENT presentation. If I'm lucky, based on my experience working with "new" props, I might to be able to present this for "the money" in a couple of years. I just won't do a trick "out there" until I'm satisfied that I've got the right routine for ME and I know it like the back of my hand, and rehearse it A LOT. Yesterday at lunch, this was one of THOSE tricks that Dick Oslund and I talked about. |

I have heard of this illusion before but didn't really look into it. Saw the Gimpy's video of the effect and I fell in love with it. A little out of my price range right now but I know what I want for Christmas.

Just a technical distinction here....
The methodology difference between the Grant Blocks version and all the other Cube A Libra sets I have (Buma, Voit, Leslie) is quite stark, even f the effect seems similar. In Grant;s method, there are only 2 s****s, and they are each used (never together) as if they were a solid cube. They are same size as a cube, and never cove a block. In all the other version, each cube has a s***l that can cover it, or not. Totally different approaches. |

I could tell it worked different because the tube was taller than the stack of blocks but did not not realize it had the 2 gimmick blocks. I don't know if its proper to call them S****s as they don't cover anything. Probably would not have bought it if not for the instructions. Cant imagine what you could do with this without some directions. Will try to post a description of what it can do after I get it in hand.

Gimpy,
I do not have instructions with my Baffling Blocks, but I perform it based on what I read and learned in the instructions. Here is the basic 3 phase routine. Reference stack is stacked (from top down) 3,2,1, followed by the working stack in same order. Working stack covered with tube. 3 moved from top to bottom of reference stack. Tube removed and working stack now has 3 on bottom as well. Phase 2....reference stack is 3,1,2 from top to bottom. Working stack placed in matching order, then covered with tube. 3 moved to middle on reference stack. Tube removed and working stack now has 3 in middle. 3rd phase very similar to 2nd phase, except eventually a 3 is moved to a different spot in the reference stack, with the 3 accidentally being reversed. Same relocation and reversal happens to working stack. You are right, this is nothing like Cube A libra in method, just in effect. The 2 gimmicked blocks are not used a s****s, but both are made where one can be hidden in the tube, while still showing the tube empty. I have your CHOPPO NUMBER 2. It is fabulous. So, if you make any of these Baffling Blocks up, please put me at the top of the list to buy one. THe Grant graphics are pretty cheesy, but the trick is so good that I use it anyway. PS MAybe I can talk you out of a copy of the instructions |

As to story line. Today one could easily script one based on "Fake News vs Verfified" or "News Announcement and Spicer backpedal"
or "Alternative Facts" -- even "making sense of Medicare bill" or "Internet Polls" If presented from the position that the performer is trying to make sense of what is going on, these could be humorous and politically acceptable to most audiences.

I have had many various cube A Libra props, the one I really love is Cubes by Carambamagic. It uses one tube and four blocks. The routine is very good and the tube can be shown empty after every change

I have always loved this effect but am particularly interested in 3 Block sets. I have been on the fence with this set https://www.stevensmagic.com/shop/grants......s-gimpy/ and would greatly appreciate any recommendations or reviews. Thank you so much.

I am considering the same set, so will also be watching this thread. I know the workmanship will be top notch as I have a few of Gimpy's props, just wondering about workings and ease of operation.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

Gimpy's version of the Grant "1-2-3 Blocks" is a nice looking set to be sure. I like the look and think it would lend itself to many themes (old west, steampunk, Renaissance, etc). However the original Grant color scheme on the blocks (see the photo Bill posted on page 2 of this thread) is more visible even in a small room. I really like the proportions of Gimpy's version. His blocks appear to be cubes which would make them very stable. Grant's version the blocks are rectangles, that is they are not as deep as they are wide and tall.
I have and still use the Grant version. The "1-2-3 Blocks" does not work using the same principle as the classic Cube a Libra. The effect is similar but the working is way different. If is more like the old "Wonder Blocks (S.S.Adams) than the Selbit/Conradi Baffling Blocks.
