Well, I have always had a thing for escapes and I think I want to start actually doing some but I have no idea where to start. I have a friend who is a magician who is very big into escapes but I only see him during the summer so I was hoping that you guys could help me out by giving me some book names, video names or websites that are good sources. I would prefer handcuff related stuff but I guess any type of escape that is a good for beginners is fine by me.
Also, I know that some people use gaffed cuffs and some use normal, I would be interested in using normal cuffs if possible. |

I think most knowledgeable escape artists would agree that
http://www.cannonsgreatescapes.com/ is the best place on the web to get escape books and props. Check them out! |

The other guys are right and going to the best to learn - is the best way to learn.
But there are some chain and rope escape bookets available in most magic shops at around $8 and you can try some of the more basic stuff and see how escapes play for you. It will also keep you busy while you wait for your friend or the "right" expert source. I started with a simple Siberian chain escape and now do stocks, several other chain, and the mailbag escape. I am getting ready to pick up a strait jacket next - I don' know if there is room to get out of one inside a mailbag, but I will find out I wasn't sure I wanted to do escapes, but when folks were so amazed by the easy chain escape - I was hooked. So don't be afraid of the simple stuff. To the Lay Person they are an impossible effect. BroDavid

Cannons sells some good escape books and even has a handcuff picking kit to learn with. But before you go out and buy handcuffs and other restraints, check out the books first. There aren't many recent books published for escape artists but if you ask around, you'll find a few that are the staple of this art form.
May I suggest a few: Norman Bigelow's Course in Escape Artistry Norman Bigelow's The Cord John Novak's The Art of Escape Vol 1-8 John McLaury's Encyclopedia of Escapes and the recent remake of it called Micky Hades' New Expanded Encyclopedia of Escapes David DeVal's Lock Picking Part 1&2 and The Escapology Secrets of David DeVal UF Grant's Rope, Chain & Box Escapes Burling Hull's 33 Rope Ties & Chain Releases These books are some from my escape library that I find incredibly valuable. There is a wealth of information inside them and once you get the basics down, your imagination will go wild with ideas on how to combine different restraints to come up with a unique routine that's all your own. Read, read, and read some more. There is also an escape artists email group on yahoo groups that you may be interested in joining. We talk over many escape ideas and share different techniques with each other. Be careful though, escapes can be very addicting! Break a key! Joe Marotta |

I would love to hear other's recommendations too!
Oh, Jay Leslie put out a video last year (?) on escaping from a straitjacket. I believe Cannons sells it. And he has one out on his jail cell escape. Jay's jail cell escape video is really fun to watch. Great job Jay! Joe |
