Mr. Carpenter,
I think your work is great and I think my personal favorite thing I've seen from you is your impulse change. It's been a while since I've popped in the video where I saw it explained. I was curious if there was a story as how it was created or why. Also curious if it's your variation on a previous move I do apologize if you've covered this in the video, I'm hoping if you have you might say it again here so more people can learn about this change. Also, curious what other applications I may have missed if I've only seen it on your video.
Thanks,
Pete
P.S. In a day where Dan and Dave are releasing unbelievable color changes, I don't think they're reliable. I know Dan and Dave themselves have said so for the workers out there, but I know this is a worker and has been used my many a card men since.

Jack welcome,
I know your Impulse Change is explained on your new DVD. I was wondering if you made any refinements / changes since you first published it?
It's a great move.

Thanks guys, both of you. Yes, I run another description of the move in the new DVD set. Yes it is also described in the A-1 Video, as well as in Expert's Portfolio. I think I've got it covered!
The inspiration was Ray Kosby's move, Ray's Rise. It really is a handling to allow you to get into the "switch" position of Ray's move, starting with a double, if you think about it. At least that's how I see it.
One of my favorite tricks with the change is a four ace sequence I've detailed in my notes "Pasteboard Palette", and another is the "Houdini and Bess" routine on the Sessions DVD#1.

Took me awhile to get the impulse change down, but now it comes fairly easy.

I should let you know that more applications and refinements, as well as some nifty flourish handlings will be included in the new book- courtesy of a soon to be announced card man from Montreal!

I should also mention that some of the confusion concerning "The Impulse Change" must be no doubt in part due to it's proliferation on YouTube. I've seen quite a few good handlings of it (No proper credit, or a wrong credit- even saw one posting that said it was a change of Justin Miller!), as well as some monstrosities.
Even tutorials for the move are on Youtube- be careful with those- none of them right so far, usually teenagers, even though some of them manage to make it look pretty good.
The most common mistake I see is placing the double in the deck initially angled. (Instead of doing it as instructed in Expert's Portfolio #1, or the A-1 tapes, and the new DVD.)
Also, the move was featured in the titles for the movie "Shade" and it looks pretty good. (Don't know which of the guys performed it.) But the improper set up was used. When you do that, it tends to make it look like your "babying" the card, instead of being free and easy by using the automatic one-handed angling.
Well, got that little tirade off my chest. . .

Looking forward to the new book and checking out your refinements on the impulse change.

Thanks,
And others, if I get my way! More than a few people have been very creative with the move. . .
Check out the Avalanche thread for two routines I use it for. . .

I learned it from Expert's Potfolio, I'm just sometimes functionally illiterate.

That was a well constructed sentence Mike.

While we're on the subject of this awesome move....a friend from Chicago uses it in a different way and fried me with a change I've done for years. After a card is selected, and the cards are placed in the proper position, he does the dirty work as he turns the cards face up and sets them on the table. So now the deck is face up with one card sticking out face down. You can then remove the card to show it has changed to the selection.

Pepka- that is good. In fact Steve Mayhew and Steve Dobson both have suggested a similar handling, for a delayed change.

I guess I'm not just functionally illiterate. I meant, of course, Expert's Portfolio. I think I got it right this time. By the way, that's one of my all time favorite books.
