Anybody remember the old magic shop in Ottawa during the late 1970's?
It was run by this guy "The Amazing Barkin", and I was a teenager and worked there (for free) on Saturdays. My memory of those days is a little foggy but I remember Jack "Jacko" Marshall used to come by on Saturday mornings. He came in and was very funny... the smile never dropped from his face-- except for this one time. I had a bunch of friends visiting the shop. And Jack, always entertaining did some funny balloon animal stuff... including a bit of more 'adult' humour. In this one routine he made some animal shapes, then nipped the phallic shaped balloon out of the sculpture and suggested the balloon might be used on a date, wink wink... We all burst out laughing... but not for the reasons Jack was thinking... turns out that one of my friends was dating his very sweet daughter, Laurie, and in fact, had a date with her that very night. The smile dropped from Jack's face... but only for a moment: "Have I ever told you about my knife throwing act?" he asked.

Hahahaha!
I use to be part of the Ottawa Magic Club in the 90's and I remember Jack Marshall very well. Too funny... I was a little young around the late 70's so I don't remember that magic shop. For me it was the joke shop on Bank street which had a small magic section in it (Bill's Joke Shop? late 80's or so) I remember buying my copy of Mark Wilson's book there. |

Oh yeah!
Bill's Joke and Magic Shop... I don't remember there being any magic there when I was a kid. It's great to hear that Jack was still going in the 90's!

I have a few buddies in the Ottawa Magic club and last I heard the club still meets in Jack's basement every month and he's still very much an active member!

I've met the Amazing Barkin quite a bit. He's kicking around the London Ontario area. He travels a lot to conventions and can always be spotted at the larger magic shows that come to London ( Copperfield, Murry Hatfield's tour, Shriners fantasy, ect.)

I am sorry to have to report the death of John "Jacko" Marshall, who was recently being discussed here, in Ottawa at age 80.
I am not sure how long this link to his obituary notice will be active, but here it is for those who are reading this shortly after I post it: http://www.legacy.com/can-ottawa/Obituar......30407385
I formerly ran a site of links to help Canadian magicians, magicinfo.ca, but I retired it in 2022.
