When is it time to form a team?
When you are making enough money on your own that other human beings can make a living off of 20% of your income. A manager is someone who looks over your career and helps you to create a full, complete and cohesive marketing campaign. Most managers only have a handful of clients. 4 - 10. A manager is the go between keeping communication lines active between you and your agents . A good manager is someone with a lot of industry and media contacts who can constantly promote your name and product to the right people to increase your fame and media exposure. They usually take 20% of all income that you make, and very rarely book you for any gigs. An agent books you as a performer to their industry clients and contacts. There are many kinds of agents. Theatrical agents, commercial agents, hosting agents, literary agents. They sign up for industry audition notices and are able to set up audition appointment times for you to be seen by the right people. Agents will usually have a few dozen clients that they book. Booking Agency or Talent Agency. These agencies have hundreds of entertainers. They keep you on file and wait for someone to call them them. If Someone calls looking for an act like yours, and you have been able to keep yourself at the top of the agents mind, they will submit you for individual gigs. Banquets, Trade shows, Parties and special events. Samuel French in L.A. and NY offers books on managers, agents and other industry professionals. They sell lists, and mailing stickers. Books on how to find an agent and what exactly a manager is looking for. Some agencies take submissions by main / email. Others have open house days once a week where you can meet someone in persona and pitch yourself and your talent to an agent. Happy Hunting! And then |
