Great story in the National Law Journal regarding an attorney's use of magic in presentation, and the opposing side's attempts to curb that activity.

Why shouldn't he be allowed? And the guy that pulls the switch on the electric chair. Does he use a stooge?

Why not? Lawyers are often lying scum bags that misrepresent facts, cut off witnesses to keep the truth from coming out, and suck people dry. If this lawyer wants to do a magic trick let him, I like that he prefers magic over law and that his office is on the 13th floor of a building.

God forbid, but if I was ever on trial for a crime I didn't commit and everything hinged on the testimony of an 'eye witness'...the first thing I would do is perform an effect and then ask the judge and jury to describe what they saw on separate pieces of paper.
I'm sure the varying results would clearly illustrate that any human's memory is malleable.

I'd recommend against it.
The obvious reply to such a special pleading to the jury is to offer an exposure of trick and to remind the jury that forthright cases and lawyers don't require deception to sway good people's opinions and the facts presented should speak for themselves. Those who can afford the services of the Masked Magician and Mitch Pellegi might want to explore that options. Now who is trying to pull the wool over whose eyes?

One time I was on the stand being interviewed for Jury Duty. For some reason the attorney asked me if I had any hobbies. I said yes I am a magician. Shockingly he asked if I could perform a trick right there in the witness box!
Of course I always have stuff in my pockets but thought it not a great idea. The judge had stepped out and I thought if he walked back in mid trick he would not be pleased with this happening in his court room. Needless to say I was not chosen for Jury Duty! |

Does nobody remember the first OJ trial and the effective use of the shrinking glove trick?

Yeh, I'm a lawyer too. I have had several judges ask me about the "magic" hobby I have. As the old joke goes, what is the difference between a scum sucking, bottom feeding, mud slinging parasitic creature and an attorney? Answer: nothing, except one is a fish (or something like that). Many excellent magicians and magical authors are attorneys (World Magic Seminar had a ton of them in their leadership)- too numerous to mention here. Even a magic legion like Karl Germaine was an attorney. So we ain't all scum suckers.

Agreed MagicBus! I am also a lawyer and HAVE used magic in front of a judge (non-jury)! Believe it or not, it earned me credibility... "...sometimes what seems impossible, actually isn't...so consider an alternate view of the facts.."
