Up The Ante by Martyn Smith.
If you're into gambling type routines or you just love extremely clever and easy to do card effects, then I'm sure you will love this routine by Martyn Smith, which will be available very soon from http://www.magicshop.co.uk . Imagine this.......You hand a pack to a spectator, they shuffle the cards and cut them as many times as they choose (yes, once you hand the pack to the spectator you never touch the cards again). After this mixing and shuffling you now make some unbelievable predictions upon the outcome of spectator dealing of the cards to the table. First you are able to bet that the first several pairs dealt face-down to the table will contain both a red and a black cards, then you predict the suits, and finally you make a really outrageous proposition bet that the spectator will deal the ace through to king, which of course the spectator does! Remember, you never touch the cards, the spectator shuffles and cuts, any deck can be used and is completely self-working. This routine isn't for the table hopper or strolling magician, you need table space as this routine is a 'layout' type effect. If you do gambling type routines or you perform magic at parties, on the streets, parlour, down the pub or at work etc (or this could be a feature routine for that intimate cabaret type gig) then this would be very hard to top. Martyn is an airline pilot and a very clever thinker, what really stands out for me is the 'hands off' bit, once you hand out the deck you never need touch it again. Each prediction/proposition bet gets more outrageous and finishes with an impossible and logical climax. I'm getting more and more bookings these days for private house parties and this is the type of routine you can do when they say "I wouldn't like to play cards with you." In Martyn's own words...."If you did not possess a reputation as a card-sharp before this routine, you certainly will at the end! Remember that you did not shuffle or indeed even handle the cards!" Included with this are some really nice touches and presentational tips , ideas and scripts, also there are additional handling's for the more esoteric type of performer. All the best, Gary Jones.

I've 'fired this in action' a number of times now and it really gets great reactions, especially from the poker players. Don't you just love it when they give you great credit for being a card sharp, especially when the routine is 100% self-working!! How's that Dubai sunshine Martyn Gary Jones.

It's ok if you like wall to wall sunshine, 40 degrees and the sea clear and warm, like a bath-tub! Jealous?!! Looking forward, though, to the cooler climes of Newcastle next month on a layover and some decent beer! Not to forget picking up a copy of mnemonica whilst I'm there!
Thanks for the great write-ups on Up The Ante. Appreciated.

Dominic - Wow! That is an amazingly kind and generous offer! Am lost for words! Thankyou very much! The next time that I get a trip that gets me anywhere close to Waterlooville I must come and imbibe you with a beer or two!....not that pilots drink you understand......
To the best of my knowledge there are no magic shops in the Dubai area and so, coupled with a shocking postal system, I end up not entrusting/risking expensive magic packages to them and thus resort to trying to acquire magic on the short layovers that I get in the UK - and these are few and far between with so many brit pilots out in Dubai! So quite a coup for me to be able to acquire such a revered tome as this....thanks to the generosity of Dominic and the Merchant of Magic.

Very interested in this,Does the spec have to riffle shuffle the cards or can it be an overhand as very few laymen riffle when I give them cards.
cheers den |

Hi Magicden,
It does have to be a riffle shuffle, but it can be the worst most hashed up riffle shuffle in the world, trust me when I say, I have performed this LOTS and there is always someone who fancies doing the riffle shuffle themselves if the original person isn't confident. Also it adds a laugh to that point in the routine, as in the demo video people were commenting about the 'pressure being on' when the spec was about to shuffle. Trust me this is a really great routine, perfect for gambling demonstrations or after dinner with friend/clients. I taught my father this routine as a test to see if ANYONE can do this, my father is nowhere near a magician and has no skill with a deck of cards, yet he is completely slaying all his clients and friends at every event or dinner he has been to recently. Thank you Martyn for taking the time to perfect this great routine, trust me when I say this, it really does completely slay people. All the best, Ben Williams |

This not an official review but I have purchased this and already performed it in a real live situation. It went down great and I will be performing this many times in the next few days.
For those like me who love self working effects which allow you to concentrate on the performance this fits the bill. Not suited for strolling but great when performing for individuals and small groups as you must have a table. The effect can last about 5 or 6 minutes and you can really build it to a great finale.I was partly aware of the principle but this to me was a totally different working and angle. For the small cost this will give you tremendous value for money and worth a lot more than some of the hyped up rubbish that is sold these days. BARRY |

I just purchased this today and read the routine. It is truely a great gambling presentation especially that the spectators do all the handling of the deck. I'm looking forward to doing this.
It is hard to believe that the routine works with a not-so-good riffle shuffle. -Ron |

Very kind words - thanks, Ben, Gary, Barry and Ron. Have harboured this routine for a few years now, wasn't quite sure whether the magic world would think much of it so am glad that I finally took the plunge! Thanks to the Merchant of Magic for believing in it, too!
