IN THE "WHAT ARE WE TEACHING THE CHILDREN?" DEPT:
I saw this last night at Thinker Toys, 60 bucks retail: http://www.melissaanddoug.com/dyn_prod.p......Unrolled It's a beginning coin magic set that includes the wierdest collection of gaffs, some of which they apparently made themselves, including a Scotch & Soda, Folding quarter, pencil thru quarter, and a quarter [. The copper coin in the S&S is not a centavo. It doesn't even look like a real coin. The Half has a wierd plastic-ish patina. Can't tell whether it's real. The expanded quarter [ looks to be the size of a half. It also appears to be pressed from thin metal, like the Fun Inc. ones. The folder is pretty good. As these are available cheaply, I'll bet they just purchased these from one of the usual guys. The pencil thru quarter is the large flap type, that allows you to show both sides. (Sasco model?) The one I saw had come apart, so I can't tell you if it's any good. There's also a "poker chip" / coin trick and the Flying coins "goblets" IMHO, it's a really odd way to introduce coins magic to the little ones. Should the first great coin magic secret you learn be Todd Lassen's phone number?
Is THAT a PALMS OF STEEL 5 Banner I see? YARRRRGH! Please visit The Magic Bakery

Curtis, I've seen the set first hand. None of the coins are real. They're all date-stamped 2099. The Shell is very much like the one made by FunINC, in that it's extremely tight. The copper coin in the S&S is also one that they made. It's not based on a real coin at all.
Yes, that is my real name. Yes, I am a real person. No, you probably won't agree with me.

Ive seen these in a magic store near me - they have this brand's sets on coins, cards and close-up (string, rings, etc). The best thing I can say is the packaging is top notch! haha

I have to say I am somewhat alarmed at the prospect of a ] being included in a beginner magic set - even crap like this. The ] has been the best kept secret in coin magic for a long time. To me, the Scotch & Soda is specific enough that it doesn't register as a ]. This has me very, very concerned as a gaff carrying coin meister.

Those are just toys... no one expects gaffs to be made out of REAL coins. Do they?

Hmm..I have seen the Doug & Melissa brand everywhere, even in Honduras.
A sad day for coin magicians everywhere.
