I think your mixing up Doc Jon's with our other Unknown "Doc".
Steven's riffle cull in any event will soon be taught by Mr David Benn I think but none of the Doc's are teaching it, as far as I know.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

I spent time reading Doc Jon's posts over at Scoundrels this past weekend. Great reading and what a cool site Pop Haydn has over there!

I'm also looking for a copy of Down Under Deals, but can't seem to get my hands on one. If anybody has any idea where I might be able to get one, please let me know. This was available from Michael Vincent productions until recently. I'm a bit sad to see he's out of stock. I'm not planning on selling mine. If you are trying to track down the manuscript for the greek deal, may I recommend an alternative? Jason England's video on theory11 is just great. |

Thanks, I saw this post in a hurry and admittedly got a tad excited thinking it was our other Doc. My mistake.
For the riffle cull, I was told it was inaccurate, so it must be acting some self fulfilling prophecy or something. I'll break it down and have another look. Thanks for your help. Ed |

In reference to my first post, I realise now, thanks to tommy, that I got my Docs confused.

I spent a few hours on it today. Still nowhere near where I would like it. But I found it pays to really look at how you do the pull out shuffle.

I've watched the first two DVDs. Very entertaining stuff! Great stories. The Roll move is very good. Also I really like the mexican hit. I have no idea if you can get away with it but mechanically it's very interesting. Cool stuff.

The DVDs are a MUST HAVE.
I like the moves in the videos, but really, really enjoyed the stories. I felt like I was right there, hanging out, shooting the bull with Doc. I laughed a LOT at his tales - anyone who has gambled for a living has some good stories, but Doc Jon's tops most I've heard. Can't remember when I laughed so much at a video. For magicians - these are a great study into the mind of a card cheat. If you do any gambling routines, these will help you get your patter correct. Do you know the difference between a mechanic and a crossroader? Ever use the terms interchangeably? You shouldn't. It's just one of the subtle things you'll pick up in the DVDs. Sam |

I've known John Personally for many years and I can tell you that these videos are just the tip of the iceberg. The most amazing thing that these videos show is vibrant and magnetic personality that this singular individual possesses. I've heard many of these stories before and every time is like hearing them for the first time. John has put at least 10 years of thought (that I know of) into what the content of this video would be and it shows. More documentary than instructional video, it contains enough information to add credibility and limitless patter to any gambling routine. The basic card handling moves are revelations not to be missed. So simple, yet will add that necessary professionalism to card handling in magic or gambling. Not to mention the chance to watch an old pro show the real work.
P.S. See if you can spot the unmentioned second dealing during the instructional section. I didn't until John himself pointed it out to me. He's that good!

Mine just arrived and I just finished watching all three. These things are pretty good!
I shelled out because I like John but I gotta tell you I don't regret it for a second. I'm ready to watch them again. This is different than anything else I have seen. I guess If you think of the documentary that Danny Korem did on Ed Marlo, or if you think of everyone sitting around the table talking on the Vernon Revelation videos you will get an idea of the feel of this set... except that it is a little more colorful than those examples (to put it mildly). That "Western Hit" is something else boy. Good stuff Doc. |

This was the first time I ever wanted to shout back at the screen while watching a dvd. Every time someone asked Doc Jon a question or interjected a comment I wanted to say "Shut Up and let him talk!". He is that engaging.

I'll be grabbing these DVDs shortly, so thanks for posting about them. Can anyone recommend anything else along these lines that may be out there and available?
Thanks!

That Jam Auction is something else, boy. A must see.

I almost don't want to hype DocJon's DVD set.....but I will at the expense of having this information kept to a small cadre of folks, and because this information just isn't available anywhere else and deserving of attention from all who might be potentially interested in this subject matter.
This set is excellent on all fronts. There really has been nothing like this put out before on DVD, which in and of itself would make this a worthwhile purchase.......but it goes beyond that. DocJon knows of what he speaks, and shares it openly on this set. It is an inspiring viewing in terms of coming close to understanding exactly what "The Life" actually looks like, and reminds me of David Maurer's books as an authoritative source on a subject which, to this day has only a very small library of available works for one to study. The only proviso is strong language, (you probably shouldn't have your kids hanging about in the background as you're viewing this). In my opinion, any attempt to curtail the language would have distilled this unnecessarily, and taken away from what is essentially a perfect DVD set on "The Life". Highly recommended (without reservation) |

Doc Jon talks like Tony Soprano, and like Tony, he is not the sort of person that you want to tell to "watch his language."
I felt that it was important for people to get a real sense of what he was like, when he was relaxed and comfortable and being himself. I believe we really captured him, and you will feel as if you have really gotten to know him in the course of these tapes. I would like to quote from a recent e-mail from Darwin Ortiz that Doc Jon shared with me: "I've heard a lot of funny stories about mishaps with juice joints--including one where a juice joint built into a pool table started emitting smoke during a game. But your story about the lights dimming every time they hit the juice is one of the funniest. And the Yakuza story about the jars was just amazing. I enjoyed the moves and was particularly intrigued by the stud deal where the card is levered upright with the dealing hand. It's the only case I've encountered that combines a peek and a second deal in one move. You get to look right at the card and then decide whether or not to pull a deuce. There have been a number of magic DVDs that attempted to create the feeling that the viewer is sitting in on a conversation. This is the only one I've seen that completely succeeded. I really felt like I was sitting there with you guys. The time flew and I was sorry when it was over. You've certainly lead a fascinating life. I appreciate your candor in describing the bad with the good. It's a good antidote to the ridiculously romantic notions that magicians love so much. I'm not religious myself but I thought that your closing comments on the DVD were beautiful." I have to say that I am proud of all the DVDs I have produced for School for Scoundrels, but this set is probably my favorite to have produced and edited. |

I met Johnny at The Fun Shop in thr Mall of America when I first got back into magic, after moving to Minnesota. It was nice to hear stories at first, just some old guy talking stuff to get me to buy more. After a few months, I found out that they weren't stories, it was real. Just the way he told certain things and the look in his eye, I was talking to someone with experience from the school of hard knocks. One of the nicest guys I've ever met, but he wasn't afraid to tell you to get lost in his most colorful of expressions.
I'm sorry they closed the shop up and I lost touch with him. He had some health issues and for a while, I was afraid he had passed on, untill I happened to see his pic on the DVD's...I didn't care what the DVD set was about, I was getting it. Glad I did. Thanks Whit for letting me get back in touch with "The Card-iologist", Doc Jon |
