Hi Guys!
I don't know how I have managed to keep Up The Ante from these pages but it is a lovely little self-worker that will stump your audience - speechless! There are a few threads running on it already in the workers, the latest and greatest and one in magic tricks/the good, the bad and garbage. I won't blather on self-promoting it, read what everyone else is saying. It is being generally well received, though, in all quarters, so take a look! Martyn

I can't recommend this one highly enough folks. No connection with Martyn whatsoever - its just a darn good effect that has forced me to include it and to re-script my act. Its no miracle for magicians but its a sure fire winner for lay-people. The beauty of it is, its all automatic AND hands off - you never touch the deck and then they shuffle the cards! The biggest cynic in my life, my girlfriend, stated this one impressed her!
I'm a bit surprised that this hasn't had much feedback. If that's the case, I'm delighted too, because it means that only Martyn and I are doing it! Oh, for £10? Magic! |

No your not the only one, the effect as I said before is really great. Personaly I modifier the plot and patter to fit a special wedding performance, with jumbo cards and the two lovers handling the cards, then do a sort of complemantary test...
It will be amazing I hope... More after I've done this ;-)

Lumberjohn has posted some 'food for thought' on the private forum about different presentations etc. Worth a look.

Martyn,
I have read in another post that it's (very) similar to Green's "Dragon's Pearl", I mean the secret involved is similar. I'm very interested but I hope your presentation is a bit more than just "different" because, in my humble opinion, the way Lennart Green makes the successive revelations does nothing but scream "stack" (or rather "pre-arranged"), event after a couple of good f**** s*******.
My English sucks, I know it. It's probably better than your French anyway...

Dear Bikoz
Sorry to have taken so long to answer you - have been away as the day job means that I am flying the worlds airways rather a lot! A couple of people have asked this question in other areas of this forum and all have, in so far as I am aware, been happy with my presentation. Everybody who has commented, either back to me privately, or through the good offices of this forum, has been very happy to see not only a different presentation but my own personal 'take' on the principles and ideas involved. Nobody has come back and said that it was money wasted - quite the opposite in fact. It is a gamble that I feel you should take... A little trawl through the various threads has brought up the following for you to consider:- '...different enough to warrant a £10 'entrance fee' and the detail on the effect and why it works is excellent. Plus, it is very interesting to discover someone elses take on a principle. Top marks Smiffy!....I will use this!' '....but what a good idea to build such a routine' '....for the small cost this will give tremendous value for money and worth a lot more than the hyped up rubbish that is sold these days' '....I enjoyed the twist on the premise that has been staring us in the face for many, many years' '....a modern presentation that I believe will appeal to more spectators and performers than Greens and several psychological touches that make the spectator feel more a part of the process. I see this effect being revitalised with Up The Ante.....' '.....if you are comfortable with formal storytelling presentation and mystical themes then you might opt for Greens presentation. If you like more spectator involvement and/or veer toward gambling themes, on the other hand, you will want to pick up Up The Ante to get Martyns take on the effect.' '....by purchasing Martyns you will get many ideas and variations on a fantastic piece of magic.' I think by far the most telling testimonial, however, is Lennart Greens himself. I delayed release when I heard of his effect and he was contacted directly with my manuscript. He allowed it to continue with his blessing. It was good enough for me that the master, himself, had spoken. Hope that this answers your query. All the very best Martyn

Dear Bikoz
Having just re-read your post, please note that in my routine there is no false shuffle involved; the deck is genuinely shuffled by the spectator. You hand him the deck and that is where it stays!! The magic happens in his hands, not yours! Martyn

Martyn,
I have just recently returned to magic and I downloaded "Up the Ante" and I think it is just great! I love the fact that the spectator gets to shuffle and the performer is totally hands off. Your e-book is very well written and explained. Tom |

Tom,
Thanks for those very kind words. This little effect always has the spectator completely baffled; the shuffle leaves them absolutely convinced that there is no trickery afoot...and the beauty of it also lies in the fact that it does not matter how rough the shuffle is either! Funnily enough, I was 'down-route' the other day (am an airline pilot) and was performing this to the crew; the purser was an ex-croupier and I impressed upon her that she could do one shuffle of the deck, so make it a good one - blow me down, she did a perfect tabled faro (never seen anyone do it before) and then thought that I had somehow 'controlled her to do it' and that was how the miracle was achieved!!! (Have never seen the inside of a casino before but it was interesting to hear her talk, with a few beers inside, about second-dealing from the shoe as well!) Glad that you found the explanations were fine; always difficult to ensure that the reader understands what you are saying as opposed to what they think they are reading! Good luck with performing it! Regards Martyn

Martyn,
That's a great story about the perfect faro! Makes it that much more of a miracle... |

Just a quick note to all of the Up The Ante purchasers out there that tomboston has very kindly added a post on the private forum with some food for thought reference probability and the dealing results etc - might give you some further presentation ideas for this effect - he is a maths teacher after all! His ideas allow you to also further disguise certain aspects of the method, too.
If you haven't already visited then you need to go to http://www.streetsleights.co.uk and the password will be available to you from your manuscript. Any more feedback on performing this effect always welcomed either on these pages or by pm. Thanks Tom Cheers Martyn

Martyn,
Just a note about your "Up the Ante". To say the least this routine is an audience grabber. I rearranged my sit down show and tried UTA as an opener, Wow!!!. My act is about money and this brings it home. At the end of my last two performances, people came up after still wondering how was it possible? I do some strong close up magic, but the reaction to this effect even stunned me. Analyzing the the effect through the audience eyes was in itself eye opening. I once did a similar Lennert Green 'Pearl',but UTA give the reality of "Real Life" cards, the way people expect or hope to see a card trick where they are in control. "No Way could he have done that". Thanks for everything! Regards John Sgtnewlon buncounit.com

Thanks for the very kind words Wizzard and Backprop! Sorry not been able to acknowledge them until now as I have been away in flying in Africa.
It is great to have somebody come back and coment on what I personally think is Up The Antes great strength; '....the way people expect or hope to see a card trick where they are in control...' - and that, to me, is this effects HUGE strength. You hand the deck to your audience (an un-gaffed, un-gimmicked one, too!) having first spread it to show them the cards and then they get on and cut it, they split the deck and they shuffle it - and they do all of the dealing, too! The magic occurs in their hands, which is what wows the audience. I just performed it twice in Africa to incredulous reaction! Keep performing it, guys! Glad to have been a help to your various routines! Feedback always welcome here, too! All the best Martyn

I like the effect, but don't you think that the first fase is a little bit boring ? I mean the first bet is allright, the second okay, but that bet goes on and on. Only after a few bets you change to something different. It all sounds very cryptic, but that's with a purpose of course.

Hi Frans,
Interesting point and yes, I have modified my presentation to take this into account - the beauty of this routine is that you do not have to stick rigidly to the way that it was written and can modify to suit your own ideas even as you present the effect. All that is required is an awareness of the numbers that you have dealt. I will explain in a pm to you but I believe that I am right in saying that this may have been covered in the private forum on http://www.streetsleights.co.uk Certainly I allude to this in the notes under 'So how does this all work?' Rest assured you can make the change with no problem. Watch your pms. Best wishes Martyn
