Anyone else here have the Sherwood Brass Smooth cups? I am polishing them every other day when I use them as I don't like the look of tarnishing brass but they look gold when they are shined, they really gleam!
They are a great weight too, something like just over 6oz's each. Just a quick question too, does anyone recommend a particular colour ball for brass cups? I am using redat the moment, there are a few pics of them here: http://cupsandballsmagic.com/Sherwood-Sm......lls.html Bri |

Try an EPOXY clear spray coat.

I really like the Sherwood cups, and I've never made a secret of that. I would disagree with your assessment of when to perform with your brass Sherwoods in one respect. The brass and/or copper Sherwoods are the cups I would use for a regular performance of any kind. The ones that are made of silver would be the ones I would reserve for that special occasion. Regarding the color of the balls -- consider your shirt, your jacket and your close-up mat. These are the stage and backdrop for the cups and balls. The cups are the stage furniture. The balls have to contrast with all of these without conflicting with any of them. Regarding keeping the finish shiny -- there are several ways to go on this. 1) Clean them and take them to someone who repairs musical instruments and ask him to give them a heavy duty clear coat. If they use traditional lacquer, this will not last more than about 6 months to a year, depending on how often you use your cups. If they use epoxy, it should last about as long as you do. Catalyzed clear acrylic will also work nicely. Once it's on there, it's on there for good. Some people use this on guitars and other fretted instruments. 2) Clean them and degrease them. Then use a spray epoxy. This may be hard to come by in the UK, because of environmental considerations. If you do this you must have some kind of spray booth ( a cardboard box will do ), a spray stand ( a dowel that is about 8 inches tall on a non-tip base ) for each cup and a drying booth ( another cardboard box ). If you don't have these, you will inevitably have dust particles that settle on the wet epoxy. An automotive painter might also be able to do this for you. Check around. I'll bet there are some around where you are. If you live in or near London, I'm sure there is a flourishing business in automobile painters, because of all the traffic. Remember traffic = collisions. Collisions produce automobile repairmen. Regarding tarnished brass: brass tarnishes in stages. At first, it is a sickly green, but then it becomes a darker black which looks darn good. One other way of taking care of the finish which I didn't mention yet -- clean and degrease the cups, then apply several coats of carnauba wax. It's a durable polish that is not slippery.

Bill, thanks I respect your view on when to use your cups etc although I was talking of people who don't have a full set of Sherwoods! i.e. smooths to practice on and engraved to perform with!
I have to admit that if I had a set of engraved silvers I would use them all the time! You know what, I think I may just let them tarnish and see how they end up, if I can get them past the "icky" stage! If I don't like them at that stage I will look at getting them epoxy coated as both you and Pete have suggested... Thanks guys Bri |

Hi Bri,
I have been using my Brass Sherwoods for years now and I would say clean them before you perform with them if you like that look. I did that for about three years and it worked out great. It is very difficult to get them to tarnish pretty with use for some reason. They hit a certain stage and they almost call out to be cleaned. I had them Antiqued and finished by Jake when he owned RNT2 and now no longer have to clean them up at all. I would not reccomend doing this to the Sherwood Smooth brass though as the finish tends to chip and scratch with use. I use them everyday. Color of balls would depend on the backdrop as Bill has said and I use both Blue and Red Deluxe Sherwood balls for perfomance and also practice with Red Suede balls made for me by Mike Rogers. White balls also look great on these cups. I have also used Tennis balls (one inch sized) but didn't like how they looked on the brass...they look 100 times better on the Smooth coppers. enjoy, Mobius |

If you have one, you don’t need one.
If you need one, you don’t have one If you have one, you won't need a better one If you have more than one, you don’t look at worse ones You need one to get another one And you certainly need one to get to the top But if you don’t have one to begin with You shouldn’t get any one to get started Which means you really have no idea how to use one in the first place Do you? You can share one, sure You can even start using one if you’d like But you can’t fake one. Wanting one Needing one Wishing for one The point is If you’ve never had any form of one Ever People just seem to know Have a set of Sherwood cups

Pete, Bill, Mobius, Lawrence, thank you..
I also think I made a mistake in the review in the way I thought people had said not to use Sherwoods, Bil pointed this out and also Mike on another forum. i.e. that people practice with smooths and use engraved for best, I'll adjust that when I get home, thanks for pointing it out guys I don't think I will be refinishing them although I do like the antique finish and Lawrence, I wasn't sure if you were talking about Sherwoods or a woman Bri |

Hi Bri,
I love my Sherwoods--they're the best cups and they mature beautifully and with grace. G
