Yes, the show is on the air for it's entertainment value; not to be fair, not to perform charity work, not to make dreams come true, and certainly not to make the world a better place. Entertainment value translates into viewers which translates into a lot of money going into a lot of people's pockets. It's a business, to sell soap as they say. We all get it. Sounds to me like you're the naive one. I've worked a lot in television and there is a ton of appalling stuff that takes place in the industry (just when I think I've seen it all, a new low comes along) but having said that it is generally not as bad as some people want to believe. Sorry, but anything related to a television "competition" always causes someone to stand up and yell "it's all rigged". It's as annoying as having someone in the audience at a show like Copperfield's stand up and yell out "it's all done with mirrors". Very rarely is that the case. |

Hi Videoman,
Not so sure why you have such a strong reaction to Starrpower, but I have to agree with him. While I defer to your take as someone who has been in the television business, for as obvious as it is to you that these are not honest competitions, I have to believe that a majority of the television-watching audience thinks that they are. Just look at the postings under this topic and you'll see that people believe this is a real competition. I agree that the networks need to "sell soap", but I hate seeing people duped in the process. People spend their hard earned money calling into these shows to cast their "votes", when, in fact, it's the producers, not the "paying" audience, who determine the outcome. To respond to your analogy about someone standing up at a Copperfield show and yelling "it's all done with mirrors", the difference is that Copperfield doesn't advertise that his magic is "real", but the producers of these shows do portray these competitions as honest. I would venture to say that if it were widely know that the these shows were rigged, there would be a precipitous drop in viewership. |

Videoman, I think we are making essentially the same point.
People are discussing the ways that someone could "pass" the auditions. I really don't think that being a good act, or a better act, leads to that result. It's a show. I know some very good acts who never made it past round one, and they were never asked for their "sob story." The stories, the acts -- it's all a set-up. That's all I am saying. If that makes me naive, so be it; but I think I am far more insightful than those who are discussing the ways to make it past the auditions process. Does that mean it's "all rigged"? Who knows? All I was saying is that it's not about competition, it's about television. I apologize if you find that comment to be annoying. But I thought sharing thoughts is what discussion boards are all about. |
