The oldest wooden stocks that I have come into contact with were to be found at Littlecote House Nr Hungerford Berks.
They stood the size of a full stock set (4ftx3ft) The thumbs were secured in two holed sections with the forefinger inserted next to them in other holes. When the top part of the stocks was lowered it made the finger knuckle joints bend at right angles to the stocks (No way could either hand be released, without amputation or bone breaking) Tried them for size (Multiple holes of various sizes to fit any size hand were on either side of the stock centre). A very well made unit which had been highly waxed and polished, gave off the illusion of a piece of fine furniture, rather than a restraint. The Cromwell era is well documented as being resident at Littlecote for many years but I believe the stocks went back a lot further in time. The house has been converted by Warners as an upmarket retreat Hotel, what happened to the artifacts I have not a clue. The Ghost room where the dripping blood from an infant thrown to its death in the fireplace still remains, blood stains included ! With effort, I am sure these stocks could be located and dated (On season now so have no time on my hands to investigate further). Ken. |

That finger-stock device is described in the late-19th century book, Old Time Punishments. It was allegedly used for giving rowdy party guests a 'time out.'

Thanks to all. My research needs are for the current gimmicked thumb stocks of the type Jay Leslie manufactures. I know I have seen the principle in an old book... the question is, which one? Since the purpose of my research is for magical use, I don't need to know much more than you've already given on the history of actual stock use for punishment. My punishment will be that I will have to go through every book in my considerable library looking for the reference... with no guarantee that I didn't read about it in some book in someone else's library. Thanks for any assistance.

That;s a good question. I remember seeing them when I was 12 so the idea must go back to the dark ages!
