Quite so! I started in summer of '47, using John Booth's routine, mainly because Booth's routine did not need any droppers. All balls were gotten from pockets, when a "previous" ball had been vanished. --It was PRACTICAL for the conditions in which I "worked". I was 16, and, had only seen the "xxxing" balls once or twice, performed very casually by amateurs, who did the "catalog description act"!

I had read Tarbell, but his routine was the very basic multiplication. He explained the principle, but his patter, was definitely not my "style" (if I had any style, at that age!) hee hee

At 18,I attended the '50 IBM/SAM convention, and, saw several routines. I remember Geoffrey Buckkingham's presentation, but, it was too "classical" for me. Then, I saw Percy Abbott demonstrating "his" PERPETUAL BALLS. WOW!!! (THAT WAS ONE OF THE BEST DOLLARS THAT I EVER SPENT WITH A MAGIC DEALER!!!)

About 3 years later, while I was in the Navy, I attended the MAES convention. While there, I met SATAN. (I had better explain THAT, before Duane Laflin jumps in here!) Satan was the stage name of the late Wilfred Sylten (sp?) a dealer in Philadelphia. I invested another dollar with Satan, for a visible penetration of a ball thru silk. (Another of the "best dollars"!) I learned later that the penetration was the brain child of the late Bill Williston.

Now, I had a follow up to the PP! It was added to the whole ball routine. I was too young to realize yet that I had been, and was, presenting the routine as a "look how clever I am" routine.

Fast forward again. I was out of the Navy, and, had matured a bit (!!!) I realized that the PERPETUAL BALLS, and the VISIBLE PENETRATION was playing MUCH STRONGER than the XXXING BALLS! (I had learned how to present the PP, & the PENETRATION, so that it was NO LONGER, a "look how clever I am" bit. It was, basically a "frustration" bit.

I cut the xxxing balls!!! It was one of the best decisions that I ever made!

YEARS later, Karrell Fox gave me a "second finish" for the routine. It was the flash production of four balls.

I wrote up the entire routine in my book, and, I am very proud of it. It can be seen on my dvd of several school shows (with a real live student audience!) Average running time is: 5 minutes.

Oh! I wrote up my thinking about the xxxing balls, and included the handling I had discovered, years ago, in which it wasn't necessary to work "profile" to the audience! If I wanted to do the xxxing balls again, I could do it FACING the audience, and, surrounded.

Instructions for my routine for the balls can be found here:

"This is a good first routine for someone just getting into the multiplying balls, but the advanced student will find this a solid structure for a nearly impromptu routine. In this video, Pop teaches every detail of his routine, and the psychology, as well as his patter. The routine works silently or with music, but it lends itself especially well to patter for walk around and parlor situations.

"Pop also teaches several methods to use the routine to draw a crowd and teaches how to "steal an angle" when working situations change. The presentation is fun and quick and blows people away. This trick doesn't look like showing off, but it establishes skill and credibility right away.

"Pop teaches a method for cleanly putting the balls and shell away without exposing the shell, and making all four balls look normal and natural.
It also leaves the magician in position to begin the routine again."

Dang, Whit, I never knew you did a billiard ball routine. What other fun stuff you got that I haven't seen?

I just do Dale Salwak's very classical BB routine, which is nice, but yours looks like a lot of fun. You make everything fun and your own. I never saw Al Leech do his BB routine, so I don't know how it differs from yours, but the one you taped in the Cellar feels very "Pop," to me. I want to come over and have you teach it to me! LOL! Smile I'll even bring treats for Cash. Smile
