I just watched a Criss Angle episode and I laughed so hard my stomach hurt. He hypnotized everyone on the floor of Circus Circus, and stated that these were all strangers to him and that he had never met any of them. He then proceeded to put them in various "floating" positions, one did the barstool levitation, one the broom suspension, one the gamolo, one the "lean", and one was even suspended by invisible cables. I guess it works for him.

AND, I'm pretty sure he is the person who is the guillotine prank; either that, or it's a family member because the guy is a spitting image to Doug. I found this funny because I know Doug has been seen and featured as a "consultant" on the show. It was kinda neat too every levi used though. |

People running cameras and journalists especially are taught to merely report the news, not become the news. There was a case about 25-30 years ago where a solo reporter (lone cameraman) made worldwide news, reporting some crash. He was first on the scene, set his camera on a tripod and began helping the people. He was fired for including himself personally in his newscast. I know it's not a "news story" but the guy running the camera probably got inundated with this story like many of us journalists have. Just so we know why the cameraman wasn't "rushing to help." ^_^ |

It's very fake. I was laughing so hard when I saw it.
I was with a friend of mine and said before it happened, that Criss angel is going to pretend that something went wrong. |

I am sorry that this is my first post after taking a brake for a couple of month but I just can't resist: This man has nothing to do in our business! Period. I respect any busker in Hollywood or NY more then this freak.
Two cents spent...

Magicians helping Magicians? Ha, what a joke. I find more magicians bashing other magicians in this Café, than I do helping. Here's my two cents. If you aint got nothing nice to say, don't say it. It is not your places to judge Criss Angel or any other magician for that matter. If a magician asks for your input, give it, if not, shut the hell up. Truth be told, Criss has obtained a level of success that many only dream of. I may not like some of his methods, but that has gone for many magicians as well. But he certainly has added a lot to the art too. Like elevating interest in young people. I have gained so many more bookings for teens and young adults because they saw his show. And guess what, my audiences are blown away, because what they thought he might have done one way, I did right in front of them, and it blew them away.
So in closing I say this. Stop bashing the guy, the only thing your succeeding in doing, is making yourself look jealous, because hardly anyone really cares to hear your criticism. You act like a bunch of gossiping church ladies, rambling on about the Pastor behind his back. And whats so sad, those of you who bash him in this forum, if given the chance to meet him in person, would probably try to buddy up to him and kiss his butt.

Well, CCPCris, I will disagree with you.
You seem to be taking these criticisms far too personally. As long as there are people of any kind of prominence in a field, there will inevitably be criticism and comparison. And yes, some of it will be biting. You certainly do not have to agree with the opinions stated here, but some may actually find them helpful. As an admonition to pursue a purer approach to the craft. In a music forum you will find detractors of hip-hop "artists" who have no real musical talent of their own and simply ride on the coat-tails of genuine musicians by sampling their music. Someone who possesses no real sense of pitch, rhythm, meter, etc. really has no business calling himself a musician. I just happen to see a parallel argument here. That the ends do not justify the means. But you are exhibiting the same level of grousing of which you accuse the rest of us. I find it interesting that you say "If you aint got nothing [sic] nice to say, don't say it." Then you proceed to compare us to a bunch of gossiping church-ladies and posit a theory that we would fawn over Criss Angel if we met him. Hmmmmmm. Pot/kettle anyone? |

The only thing I got to say about Criss Angel is I saw his show Mind Freak in Time Square and I was instantly a huge fan. Also his 1st few TV specials were great. I do not know who told him to change everything about what made him different but it was bad advice. The long hair Goth/Crow look worked. The pretty boy who talks to much does not. If he did the NYC Mind Freak show in Vegas it would with out a doubt give the big boys a run for their money. But on the other hand he is now very well known(to the public),rich, and look at his girlfriends I would take off my makeup as well.

Everyone gets gold medals, that way they could feel better about themselves. The people that don't go wouldn't get them of course... but maybe we could have something where we ordered them online that way anyone could get a gold medal and say they were the best at anything. I like that, I think you're on to something, Cris! And also no more reviews of movies or shows... we should just take the word of the people that made the movie, they're honest aren't they? Oh... and don't you hate those annoying health department ratings on restaurants. I think if you pay enough money you ought to be able to buy the grade you really want. ... Or then again, maybe we should be allowed to have an opinion as that simple thought is guaranteed in the First Amendment to the Constitution. Maybe certain people have more credibility at making decisions on certain topics based on their achievements and fields of mastery. Maybe we need true experts to help separate the wheat from the chaff in matters we don't fully understand. I often wonder what it is that makes people afraid of differing opinions from their own? I think that as I get older I can more openly embrace the thought that someone can have a differing opinion from me and still be ok. So I don't agree with them... maybe I think they're an idiot, it doesn't really mater in the great scheme of things. I for one love the opinions on here! Yes, there are some I discount immediately as I've found their views to be a little lacking in credibility. A few I read right away as they come from a position of wisdom and thoughtful consideration on each point. Then there are the most of us who might be in the middle but still make a great point from time to time so we have to be judged each time we write. I'm willing to take the time... it's really worth it as opposed to trying to stifle all dissenting opinions from my own. p.s Bernie... I love reading your posts because they always make me scratch my head and sometimes my head itches and after I scratch it I feel better so thanks!

Well a good example I guess is years ago when I first got into magic, I remember every local magician talking about how terrible DC was, and that he gave magic a bad name, because he did no sleight of hand just stage illusions. Now everyone reveres him as a god. I like David yes, and I like some of Angels stuff and many others. But my point is simply put, I think people spend way to much time criticizing. We can all read, why every day is there another post, about the exact same thing that we have read 100 times before?
Just my opinion, guess it really does not matter. I am left to think that it don't matter, however, if anything, just look at it as my opinion.

There are two ways to look at the way to entertain people.
1. Give the people what they want, even if they require 100 stooges to make the effect look real. This is what makes the Mask Magician such a success. People want a product and he gives it to them. Same with Chris Angel, he give what the viewers want. Without that there would be no success. 2. Stand by one's ethics and perform according to the old "pirate code". "What we have here is a failure to communicate". We give the audience what we think they want and at the same time keep in the good graces of our magical society, and the unenforceable rules of ethics and none-exposure. Which is RIGHT? It depends on who you ask.

I always ask my public if they enjoy my performances. I care about them, since other magicians aren't likely to pay me to perform.
The audience enjoys what Criss does. Does he give 'em "panis et circensis"? Not sure, depends on who you ask the question to. But one thing is for sure: The audience worships him, and Criss gets well paid for what he does. Wild guess: If Criss would mind about what we, magicians, bash about on him he would be way busy with our opinions to be successful. |

Oooh wow. But showing off as god claiming to have so called special "powers" is a bit against the magicians ethics... Criss is digging his own grave...sorry. AND it has nothing to do with jealousy. Now take a look at this: Why do I need gore and blood and make it look like someone's head is chopped off and post it on the Internet to get a reaction? Is that magic I ask you? Is David Copperfield or Lance Burton doing this to 'get attention'? No. Why? Because they learned and live and are 'grown' magicians and foremost entertainers. Case closed (for me)

David Copperfield went the way of many professionals, learning the basics, moving toward illusions, doing mini-storytelling heart-tug routines to where he is today.
Lance Burton was excellent and went the same way, however, his FISM routine launched his career. Chris Angel does appeal to the "I want to be WAY different" crowd, to his attempt to succeed the same way Copperfield and Burton did. It seems it isn't working as well as he wanted, however they all make more money than most other magicians, and each has a following.
