I love the effect. I couldn't find any really nice ones so I made my own. I also made them larger so they are more visible. I think it's a very under-estimated effect. If it's structured well it plays very nicely.

Docc has a nice routine in his "book of numbers". Its also on his Vault DVD set. Really good stuff.

A great little effect, I have been searching for a good source for buying them in bulk but with no luck :-(

I've seen Docc's on his DVD Matthew, it's fab! I have my own routine though.
I couldn't produce the ones I make in bulk George, there's too much work in them. I'll try and post a pic. Bri |

They look pretty nice! They remind me of the coloured wooden blocks we had at school for adding and worknig out fractions etc.... Maybe there's a story there!

Mental Logs' are amazing tools, and open to many entertainment possibilities. Kaarlo....I Really like your idea about introducing an abacus for an interesting storyline and also to take attention off the 'Logs' for the purposes you mentioned. Very nice Kaarlo! I did a little research and learned that the first 'abacus' was used by ancient man soon after language was invented. Namely, the 'human hand and fingers'! imagine that.....Natures Abacus! I also discovered that there is an ancient one hand method of finger counting that utilizes the thumb as a 'pointer' and the 3 sections of each of the four fingers as numbers. So...starting with the index finger, the thumb touches the lower section of the index finger. for #1...the middle section of the index finger as #2 and so on. The tip of the pinky [little] finger would represent #12. I am not certain as to how larger #'s were reresented using this method [yet]....but maybe they quickly closed and opened their hand to multiply by 'ten'. [so....touching the tip of the pinky and quickly closing and opening the hand would be #1200 [?] It really does not matter of course...because using the hand as a natural abacus in this case is just for 'demonstration'. Note: Being that this is a 'demonstration', the performer could actually use both hands simultaneously. Now...to cut to the chase. The performer 'quickly' uses his/her natural abacus or abaci, and the guest uses their electronic calculator....and the performer always arrives at the total first. Happy trails. Rich |

Rich, that system works on two hands so once you have counted to twelve on one hand you hold up one finger on the other hand up to 24, then two fingers on the other hand up to 36 etc all the way up to 60. If you fancy incorporating this, here's an additional piece of information: this system was used (as I understand it) by the Babylonians up to 5000 years ago and is a base 12 counting system (or base 60 depending on who you talk to). Babylon's numerical legacy is still in plain sight: this finger counting system is why there are 60 minutes in an hour and 2 x 12 hours in a day. It's funny because people have no idea about this counting system but they carry it around on their wrist their whole life.

Same as you, I am fascinated by the history of numerals; counting systems; and time etc. In the case of actually using the Babylonian system for my Mental Logs presentation, I am primarily of course only concerned with just the interesting backstory 'tie in'. 'Doing' the ancient counting system itself is unimportant. The bonus is...no need to carry anything extra....all I need for the rapid 'calculation' [about 10 seconds or so] is already attached to my wrist. Rich |

Rich I know it's just flavour for the effect, of course, but it's a cool fact and can be a wow moment for some people to understand.

Absolutely Phill. Yes, in my experience....my guests really do enjoy learning basic facts about ancient: cultures; objects; and practices.......during my presentations. Like you said "It's just flavour for the effect"....and "cool"!

I am fascinated by this. First heard about it in the David Berglass Penguin lecture. He talks about a fascinating way he did this with the old mental sticks.
I have two questions: 1. Does anyone have any thoughts on how David did his presentation or where I might find a routine like that? 2. There's mention of using only two or three of the sticks for an effect. This was not a routine excluded with my set. Any details on how one does the effect that way?
