Many have regarded Harry Lorayne as the finest teacher magic, I agree.
I first got his “The Magic Book” around 1978 from my local library and it set me on the path. What made the difference for me was Harry’s conversational style of communicating. His was the first book which actually spoke to me and made me feel that I could do the things he was trying to teach, this is a rare gift. The Magic Book is an outstanding book for the beginner and professional. There are many routines in that book which would grace any professional program. Harry's books for the trade feature routine which have become classics, “Lorayne’s Poker Deal” and “The Four Gamblers and The Cardshark” still feature in my work. Those of you who have my new DVD set will know that the “Intuition Speller” was inspired by Harry’s routine “Controlled Spelling” from Rimshots. One of Harry’s lesser performed classics is his routine “Faro Blockbuster”, which was my first introduction to a full deck Oil and Water type routine, excellent effect. I would be very interested to know what your favorite Harry Lorayne book or routine is. Cheers Mike

Nothing compares with the bound volumes of Apocalypse. Do they count as "books?"

"Foursome" and "Spectator cuts the Aces" (second routine of Harry's Best Ever Collection vol 2) are my favorite Harry Lorayne's effects to perform...
Mike, I'm curious to know if you perform Harry's "Spectator cuts the aces" routine... with the "estimate 13 cards" plot... When I do the reveal of the first 2 aces I get caught 1/3 of the time with the "move" even under misdirection... If you perform that routine I would like to know if you have a strong line or any advice to make that routine deceptive 99% of the time...

Magician vs. Gambler, for sure!
I regularly use the two effects "Swindle of Sorts" by Paul Curry and "Lazy Man's Card Trick" by Lorayne in tandem. Others have 'rediscovered' this perfect fit, but I claim to be the first. (Who knows for sure?) Dan Garrett

Another vote for Magiacian vs Gambler the Lorayne way (even if I don't dislike the Ammar version on Easy to Master series). Also there're too many wonderful routines in Apocalypse to pick from: maybe I could choose the Sting and Poor Man's Monte. All Lorayne books and the 4 Apocalypse volumes, even though with no stage magic in them, are to me the modern Tarbell! Too strong a sentence? Your opinions are welcomed.

There is a great routine in the later volumes by an unknown card man called "The Many Face of A Woman":http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeyD0cgHLQY Also, it was the first place where you could learn Larry Jennings "The General Card". One of my favorite routines form there is David Roth's "Hangin Coins" and "Chink-a-Chink". Like I said a monster collection Thanks Harry and thanks to all the great contributors to Apocalypse. Mike

Also, I'm sorry for my forgetting: You've contributed in so many oocasions to Apocalypse and it's not easy to back track of every published item. Who know how many more gems are hidden inside this excellent collection! It just seems Lorayne is one of our favourite author. How it could be different? Best from GN. |
