OK, this really bugs me something awful. Under our names there is something that says X "posts".
Now, some members have 0, and some have 1 "posts". This is wrong. Totally wrong. Only after 2 posts should the plural be used. We have grammar hosts. Can't they fix this? |

This isn't something the grammar hosts can handle. It is a technical issue. You are only partially correct. If a member has 0 posts then the plural is correct. In a conversation, you would say member xxx has zero posts. If they have only 1 post, then technically it should say one post but it isn't worth going back and making a new program just for that instance.

I noticed it too. But I ignore it.

You might want to reread my response. No one on staff, especially grammar hosts have the ability to change a profile or verbage under an avatar. It is a technical issue.
Since most members have more that 1 post, it isn't worth trying to write a program to change posts to post for those members.

I think he just wants to keep Dynamike busy so he can steal all his secrets

No actually he wants to slow Mike down a bit so he can catch up to his post count

"Grammar Host" is the title given to the nice folks here whose job it is to correct spelling and grammar errors in the posts made here at the Café.

We all have things that bother us but don't bother most other people. Thanks to Stoneunhinged for trying to correct the grammar and thanks to the people who explained why it only occurs in one instance and isn't worth the effort involved in correcting it. Mostly a very big thank you to the volunteers who make this an excellent site because they give up their time to do the best they can.

55john55, the staff appreciates the comments and yes they do a tremendous, thankless job.
Beaulieu, besides grammar hosts which have limited capabilities here, we have QC and Mods. QC does things like merge back to back posts, and generally look for posts that do not follow the rules of the Café. Mods have the most power. They can delete, edit and enforce the rules. All the groups can do grammer corrections. Extreme rules violations or techinical issues are handled by the supervisors, myself or Steve Brooks. We also have two tech folks who do a tremendous job keeping the Café up and running every day. It sounds like we have a lot of people roaming around but we really don't. If you look at the staff page, you can we have a limited staff to handle all of the situations on the Café. None of the staff members are paid and they all work part time.

Lucky for Stoneunhinged, I had a bit of free time this afternoon. Please view THIS TOPIC and look at the verbiage below Mystic Martin's avatar.
I only changed the code on the viewtopic.php page, but I know there are other places where it could be changed. I have to go back outside and mow the yard now, so those will have to wait. |

WHOA! Mary, you're absolutely wonderful. I'm stunned.
The Café may well be the coolest forum on the Internet because of people like Mary. (OK, I'll say something nice about Dave, too: BEAUTIFUL kids in his avatar. Grandkids, I presume. WAIT! Maybe that presumption wasn't very nice.... ) |

Presume away. Those are my grandkids and yes, Mary is wonderful. However, I think what she is saying is that she changed the verbage on this one member. If you go back and look at the rest of the members with only 1 post, it still says 1 posts. That was my point. It's probably possible to write a program to automatically change the plural to singular all the time but I'm not sure it's worth the effort. That's a decison for Mary and Gene as it's their time that's involved.

The "post/posts" text is dynamically generated, based on the number of posts the given member has. The text was automatically changed on all the 1-post members when I changed the code. Clear your browser cache, Dave, and you'll see it too.
To see the new code in action, pick any of the 1-post members from the memberlist: http://themagiccafe.com/forums/bb_member......rt=16500 Run a *On Any Date* search for that member's post, then click the link to view the entire topic. It doesn't work if you click to "view this post" because I haven't changed the code on that page yet. |

That was my problem. I was looking at the member list and looking at the individual post rather than the entire topic. I didn't have to clear my browser, the change was there, just a matter of how to get there. Hey, I never said I was a tech person
