In my 54 years, 53 of which I've "played" with magic, I can't recall once coming up against a Christian who was anti-magic - maybe I'm just lucky. There was one wiccan girl in college who thought badly of magicians such as Mark Wilson and Bill Bixby's show. (I didn't dare ask her about Doug Henning!) Heck, my Mom is who got me hooked on magic -- and comic books, Elvis records...
Now if you'd asked about problems with people (not just fellow Christians) who were against comic books, rolegames, or yo-yos -- THEN I'd have stories for you! *jeep! --Grandpa Chet

But then, on other occasions, he TELLS me to perform, so I really don't understand what his opinion is, really. And in regards to you last post directed toward me, I do agree that a seance drastically crosses the line, but does having a coin that has the word on it cross the line? That's simply my point.

It has always been my practice, at the beginning of each show, to spend a few moments to discuss those points of view. I then explain that as a Christian I would never do anything to offend them; so I perform a very simple trick and demonstrate how it is done. At the end, they understand what I do, and for the most part, come up and thank me for talking to them.
I say, most of the time, because at one particular event, a woman came up to me and said, 'I appreciate what you said and understand what you do. You're not like those other magicians like the ones on TV. Those are satanic'. Some people will never be convinced.

If I can tell there may be people who are nervous about having a "Magician" (as what happened when I did magic for our AWANA group) I start out the show saying,
"See these hands (done with big "Jazz Hands)!! They have MAGICAL powers!!!" This usually gets some of the kids laughing, then I say, "Do any of you really believe that?? Of course they don't. The only way we can make amazing things happen tonight is by using our imaginations!!" Even the most nervous lady who thought I studied at Hogwarts let her guard down, and has even come out to another one of my shows. That way I don't have to talk about the difference between fun and black magic. Rather by just putting it out there that, "Yes this is all fake and fun!" everyone gets it

You'd go to another magic school. There are others around the world, mentioned in the books. :D - Donald

I have no more of a problem with old magic posters adorned with imps and ghosts, than I do with old horror movies with Karloff, Lugosi, Price or Lee playing sinister, supernatural fiends (Dracula, Hialmar Poelzig, Prince Prospero, etc). It's fantasy and acting.

In reply to the first -
Christians believe in all sorts of magic already(turning women into salt/water to wine/transfiguration/seas parting- etc) When you perform magic they can see it happen, If Christians are happy to accept magic happened hundreds of years ago without proof -it should be no shock that some believe it when you appear to offer real (visual) proof. they then look to the bible which talks of warlocks and witch's, equate you to that and so condemn it. |

I wasn't aware a spiritual apartheid was in place and for the record I am Christian myself however, having read some more spiritual and magical posts in this particular area of the forum - your right, the "good news forum" is not for me.

Spiritual apartheid? Dude, you commented about turning water to wine being magic, transfiguration being magic, and the sea being parted as magic. There is no "spiritual apartheid" here. This section is for those who perform Gospel magic. I don't know why you made such a comment in the first place if you say you are a Christian.
Rules of the forum by Steve Brooks are, "This forum is provided as an area for gospel magicians to discuss topics pertaining to the art of gospel magic - - Not for folks to bash gospel magic, or the religious beliefs of the people who do perform gospel magic. If gospel magic is not your thing, the Café provides plenty of other categories to choose from, thank you. Postings that are contrary to the above guidelines will be removed with no notice or reason given." I don't know what Gospel you read, or what your definition of a christian is, but making the comment you did was a bit much.

Sorry if my post caused offense -
I just don't have a literal reading of the bible and so find talk of witch's etc laughable in 2009. That said - I was probably being a tad belligerent in tone and thus I apologise for that. as I say, your right the "good news area" is probably not for me. |

I have found that there are many Christians who do not all come to Scripture in the same way as I. Is that wrong, no - not as long as they find Jesus and have the relationship or working on the relationship that Jesus wants with them. Not all Christians take scripture as the literal Words of God... interpretation of scripture is wide within the church - that's why we have different denominations.
How many of take all scripture as completely literal and do ALL that the Old & NEW T. asks us to do? We read, study and come to a conclusion as to what it is asking us to do. We also are in different places in our walk with Him... The Peter just before the arrest of Jesus is not the same Peter after the death on the cross. Growth, experience, and study change us all. I would hope that people could make their feelings and beliefs known here without too much drastic reaction. aitchy, I pray that you continue to get involved here. And I pray that we all consider that we are not all on the same page. I really thank God that God is God and not me or my neighbor... He is so much more forgiving of our differences. 1) Love God with all your heart... 2) Love your neighbor as yourself... |
