For those interested in the plot generally, my book on it "Across The Void" (mentioned a few times in this thread) is now available as an e-book exclusively by Lybrary.com

My honest opinion is htat Paul's book is essential if you want to perform ANY version of Cards Across. In fact, if someone asks me about this plot, I will almost always say that they need to read this book before they decide on a routine. sey |

I like one of Juan Tamariz's versions where three cards peeked at (thought of) travel across. It's on one of his videos. Lessons in magic perhaps?

The reason I ask is that under either option, I could not find an effect entitled "Zen's Cards Across". any assistance in locating this effect and the name that it might alternatively be called would be appreciated. Thanks a lot for any such info Mike

Zen's Card and Envelopes is commonly referred to as Zen's Cards Across, and can be found in Thompson's My Best.

Notes:
The trick is by Michael F. Zens. It has nothing to do with Zen Buddhism. Zens is his name, and is neither plural nor possessive. The trick title in My Best by J.G. Thompson is 'The Improved "Zens" Cards & Envelopes' (p.55). See also the similarly titled 'The M.F. Zens Magic Table and Walking Through Ribbon Illusion' (p.345). It's like the Wakeling Sawing or the Malini Egg Bag. Zens. |

Further, Michael Zens' original effect was called "Miracle Pocket to Pocket." The description in J.G. Thompson's My Best is a variation of Zens' original. The description in Hugard's Encyclopedia of Card Tricks is closer. There's another variation in Hugard's Card Manipulations, Number 3 ("Radio Cards"), but this uses a different method than Zens' and requires no preparation. Yet another variation appears in The Jinx, by Daley and Annemann, but here, no duplicates. Finally, another by Horowitz in Our Mysteries, with contrasting backs.

"Zens Koan" by Jim Steinmeyer and published in Genii is well worth considering.

... and to add to an information about ZENS, read in Whaley's WHO'S..:
"Zens, M[ichael] F. "Mike" (Kenosha, Wisconsin: 24 Feb 1877-Jul 1952) Inspired at age 8 seeing Alexander Herrmann show. Learned at age 8 reading magic instructions printed inside gum wrappers. Semi-pro magician. Assistant postmaster for Kenosha 1908-1940 when retired. Moved to Los Angeles in early 1940s. Invented Zens' Card Miracle (1907), Zens' Cards and Envelopes (1907), & later Quadruple Poker Deal. Wrote The Cardology of Tomorrow (1941). Moved from Kenosha to Los Angeles in early 1940s. Died in home town. After Zens' death Joe Berg bought all rights to his tricks. Trick in Chap's Scrapbook. [Th]" |

There's also "Zens, Revised" by Glenn Gravatt in the April 1959 Genii. He gives two methods of dealing with the second envelope, both of which bring the second envelope back to the stack of envelopes. One method is a lot like the Daley/Annemann version. I like to use a top-change action, so that the second envelope never seems to contact the stack and never seems to leave the spectators' sight. The change is made while the envelope (sealed by a spectator) is handed to another spectator to sign and hold.

I know this thread is old but I am currently putting together my parlor show. I will be putting Zen's into my show. I learned it from The Complete Magician by Greer Marechal, Jr.
