I've previously suggested links to other magicians' websites here at the Café, but no one seemed interested. Yesterday I had an invitation to join LinkedIn. If you're unaware of Linked In, it's a valuable business networking site. My webmistress friend says it's a fantastic way to optimise your website, as well as showing that you're a serious business owner. Clients can post testamonials, and the links will mean your website goes higher up the search engines. In the UK, there is massive competition for the Birthday Party market from "activity parties". But magicians don't want to link directly to other magicians, in case they lose business. This provides a way to link with other magicians, whilst keeping those links pretty well hidden from clients.
I'd be happy to link with any other full-time working professionals - PM me with your email address, and I'll send an invitation. Or, just put your email address on this thread, and anyone reading it will be able to invite you directly. Let the linking commence! Potty |

I took a look at LinkIn and was turned away at the outrageous cost. But maybe that's just me, but I'm not gonna pay a good deal of money just to send/receive a few emails.

Yes, inmails are an upgrade, but, you can ask people to join your network for free.

My Linkedin is a page for my contacts to use. My weekly updates to my page goes out to all my contacts, which include event planners etc. Do you think I want to give them a list of other performers when they visit my page?
I also send folks to my page to use my contacts (these are called referrals!) ie. I have 2 event florists on my Linkedin who I would recommend, and who have seen my work and also recommend me. I don't carry their cards with me, so by being the "go to" guy for help when folks ask, raises my credibility to all of them. You still did not answer my question thoough, if you have a customer who wants to leave a testimonial on your page, do they not have to be a "contact" on your page first??? What kind of "business" do you use your Linkedin page for?? If not for clients, if not for event planners and agents, then for what?? I am failing to see how a "serious" business owner ie. a professional magician would have 25 other magicians (or more) on their business page. What am I missing?? Or are you using it only to move your site up? I have not read all the ins and outs of Linkedin, but if you can let me know the above, it would be appreciated. B Bill: You can always send an invite via ordinary e-mail to the person to join you on Linkedin. I find it a way to keep "social" contacts ie. fellow magicians seperate from my business contacts.

Jestnjoker: So how does connecting to fellow magicians on Linkedin (a business site) help improve/increase your business through contacts?

I wasn't aware that LinkedIn cost anything. I've sent a bunch of messages to folks already, and not paid a bean. Perhaps these costs are to send bulk messages to contacts you don't already have?
If you actually use it like you say, Blair, I suppose you might prefer not to have other magicians as your contacts. though, I still don't see the harm - it simply shows that you have professional connections across the magic community. for me, the main reason for using it is twofold: to have testamonials directly from clients, rather than just putting them up on my website (many such testamonials are made up or stolen from other performers); and to raise my own websites via the Google search engines, which recognise these networking sites, and will rank youu higher if you have a significant presence. In terms of using LinkedIn to "keep in touch" with contacts, and inform them about my business, I really think it's rather lame. Why wouldn't I just send regular emails? Blair, you say your weekly updates go out to all your clients, but do you think anyone bothers to check them regularly? And do you think your clients will trawl through your contacts' list to find other magicians, when it's SO easy to do that via a Google search? You'd have to be a strange cookie to do your business that way! I may be wrong, and if so, it's easy enough to remove the contacts anyhow. For me, this is a free service that helps the promotion of my business. |

Sorry about that Bill, I meant if you have their e-mail, you can invite them to link with you on Linkedin. I am assuming you already know that they are on it.
I keep my Linkedin as very much business. My Facebook is social only. Linkedin has many groups which could/can be beneficial to your business also. But to make it valuable to your business you do have to manage it. B
