I use VOID in my Restaurant Work and it FRYS em! Seriously. It's totally impromptu and unlike other impromptu magic is very visual and quite powerful. Danny did a a great job working out all the details.
Nothing is stronger than borrowing a straw from their table, borrowing a bill from their wallet, doing a miracle and then handing everything back for them to keep!

Or, paint the gimmick AND the pencil the same color?

Good suggestions, but naaahhh...I wouldn't paint it, that would just mean contiued maintance.
I disagree with christopher lyle when it comes to void being stronger than misled, I've watched the void video and performed with misled for a very long time, both are as strong as the other. Very difficult to compare. And in some cases the pencil CAN be borrowed, regardless, the pencil is handled by a spec when they sign the bill and the pencil can be given away like the straw. Why do I have a pencil in my pocket, so I can do this for the kiddies...*Sticks Pencil Thru Cheek*...eeewww, that's gross! Anybody gotta 20 spot? And then go right into misled routine. |

My bread and butter comes from restaurant work. I play 5 nights a week between 3 different places. All of the servers know that when I work, they leave extra straws (wrapped) on the table so I can use them during the evening. Can you see the benefit in borrowing a bill and having them hand you a straw off the table would be better than removing a pencil from your pocket? Even if they do examine it the pencil, don't you think it plays better to perform with something is handed to you. I have already proved that in the mind of most laymen, they can't tell the difference in "effect" between the two routines...meaning the effect of the pencil/straw melting thru the bill looked identical (even tho' there are minor differences). See where I'm comin' from?

Great work on the comparison Lyle.
I Saw Danny Garcia's lecture at TAOM Houston in 2009. I got Symphony from him then and played with void a little bit. Now I want to take it back out. I don't currently work restaurants, but I do trade shows and walk around for corporate functions, and no straws are normally available. I usually have the Perfect Pen with me. But I can see how great void would be to learn well for "anytime anywhere" magic. And just to know it well, when straws are available. And it IS perfect for restaurant work and even performing when you are eating out! Thanks for your comparison. ACE

Though mis-lead requires a gimmick, the gimmick provides such strong convincers that void can not.
E.g. - During the first phase being able to push the pencil through the bill and then only holding the pencil to clearly show that you have put a hold through the pencil. It would be very difficult for person to suggest that the pencil is behind the bill with this convincer. - During the second phase being able to just hold the bill only by the edges while the pencil is craddled between the folds. Again, convincer that it would not be possbile for the pencil to be held behind the bill as the pencil would fall by gravity. When you think about it these are subtle convincers but are what sets misled apart from the non gimmicked versions. For void, once a person believes that the straw 'must' have been behind the bill as the solution, it would be impossible to convince them otherwise. If only the gimmick could be ulitised using a bic ball point, a more common writing tool these days than a pencil it would be more common and possbily less 'gimmicky'. But I agree with you Lyle that handing you something from a table is more convincing than pulling out a pencil to do a trick. Crazy thought:- Wouldn't it be amazing if each resturant could provide a sealed deck of playing cards per table. You walk up, get the diners to unwrap and open the deck of cards, you perform your miracles with them and then leave the deck on the table for then to examine and take home as a souviner. |

Not that far fetched, I've worked several trade shows where they supply cases of cards with their logo's on them for me to give away. I open a new deck, do my thing, and give the deck away. ACE

I think mis-lead looks much better than void . I don't buy the argument that the pencil looks suspicious.Just hand it out at the end of the effect, and all suspicions will be canceled out.
In my option, Mis-lead is a great trick, Void is an OK trick. To each his own.

I agree that working in an environment where straws are all around then you should go with void.
but there are also places where pencils are all around. even in bars. I don't know if its me but misled does look way more convincing. I mean in the second phase the pen can be clearly seen inside the bill "during" the penetration. |

I just bought Misled after 18 years in magic, and I don't know what I was thinking never buying it. Sorry, but it is just awesome.
As far as the pencil goes, easy solution. Buy custom printed pencils, with your name/website and give it back with the bill. You give them advertising, and they can examine everything. Anyone know if you can buy replacement Gimmicks seperate?

When I was doing this Mis-lead, it is a very simple matter to start with a pencil that can be inspected and end with a pencil that can be inspected. It may be harder to accomplish this with the straw idea, though. There was a number of very good pencil routines in magic, and I did several at the performance. That way the got use to seeing the pencil. Check out Pete Biro's Card Rise in an envelope in Tarbell 8. |

Now I'm urging to get replacement, so manufacturer's help would be greatly appreciated (this trick is even sold out at my usual magic stores) Thanks, Andreas |
