To celebrate the release of my new e-book, Book 1: Missing Pieces, a collection of real world material, including my close up acaan, impromptu ace assembly and a great all the same routine. Also contains a few pipe dreams and minuscule items such as card spins and color changes.
I'm going to be giving away free copies to the first ten people who can answer this question, and no cheating! It is often thought that prices of items in shops, such as 5.99, or 1.99 is purely psychological, to make it appear items are cheaper than they actually are. This is true but there is another reason why shops charged the odd amount. Do you know what it is? Hint: it is something to do with old cash registers. Fastest Fingers First. Email your answer to matt@mattcolman.co.uk Please note, a lot of people give away there e-books in return for good reviews. If you win a book, I won't expect you to review it - let alone read it. Best Wishes, Matt Colman http://www.mattcolman.co.uk/shop |

Two correct answers, and one wrong one. But the wrong one made me laugh. So Seven left up for grabs.

Just a little note, there are four maybe five naughty words in this book. So I would not recommend it for the easily offended or for under 18's.
Six left. |

10 more people have suggested that the old cash registers couldn't handle the noughts. This is incorrect. And then there where still three.

Rizzo, I'll post the answer very soon, I had to run the competition again on another forum as they wouldn't allow linking to this forum, so once that e-book has gone, I'll post the reason!

GAWN!
Here is Mr Lopez's very correct answer. Many of the old textbooks on business indicate that odd number pricing ($0.99) was developed as a way to keep cashiers honest. Odd number pricing forces the cashier to make change, and the arithmetic using odd numbers was thought to be suffieiently difficult enough to require careful attention from the cashier. The cashier has to carefully use the additive method in order minimize the chance of being short (cheating the company) or long (cheating the customers) by cashier mistakes. Additionally, if the cashier is going to cheat both, pocketing the money, even amounts, like whole dollars, would be preferred. Smaller amounts may not be worth the trouble (plus the bulging pockets problem that increases the likelihood of getting caught). |
