I have always liked the idea of changing coal into a diamond.  It's visual and lends itself to a lot of plot lines.  I recently found a 60 glass diamond paperweight that is a perfect round cut, and is about as big as I can handle in a finger palm.

My question is:  Does anyone know where I can get a golf ball sized "fake" coal?  I really don't want the mess of using real coal, and I want something that looks "realistic"

What about using a rock about the size you want and paint it black. my 2 cents

I suggest you to go to Barry Mitchel Product section at http://www.barrymitchellproducts.com
And look for "The Mother Of All Diamonds".

It´s a great effect and you can get spear coal.

You can walk the railroad tracks and pick up coal all over the place. This is hard coal so find a piece you need, because it is hard to reshape.

At Xmas time there is a gag item at a lot of novelty stores. It is a small box or small bag with a lump of coal in it.

Go here: http://www.stoners.com and type coal in the serch engine.

I've thought a lot about the Coal to Diamond effect. Here's my take:

Get one of these Tea Strainers from any kitchen store:

http://www.orensdailyroast.com/shopprodu......t_Id=238

Wrap your diamond in flash paper and palm it. Bring out a lump of coal (same hand where the diamond is palmed) and talk about how diamonds are made... "deep in the earth with intense heat and pressure and time. We'll use this to simulate a lump of coal deep in the earth" Wrap the coal in flash paper. Switch in the flash-paper-wrapped diamond as you say "I'll place the lump of coal in here to simulate it being deep inside the earth". Place flash-paper-covered diamond into the tea strainer. Now go to your pocket to get the lighter (while you're there ditch the coal).

Hold the flame beneath the tea strainer and light it off. This gives you a great "visual" change from coal to diamond. Open the strainer and dump the gem into spectator's hands... warn them that it may still be warm.

Anyone else have ideas for the Coal to Diamond effect?

Thanks all.  I want "fake coal" largely because I don't want the mess of real coal soot.  The stoners link looks like the right item.  Good timing too, as this looks like it will be more "availalbe" with the Christmas season.

Mechanically, I may just go with Tameriz Double Crossing the Gaze switch. I remember in a old (I mean really old) Superman episode (from the '60's) where Superman squeezed a lump of coal in his hands and out came a diamond. SOOOO many plotline possibilities:

Superpowers (like Superman)
Changing you life around (transformation)
Inside "ugly" is "beauty"Time heals
and so on

I used Brown coal/ lignite dipped into a clear, dull lacquer as a final load for a "Two in the hand one in the pocket" routine. I picked it up when taking a tour of Eastern Germany’s surface mining. It is very light weight, but looks like heavy coal.

Hi Scott...

I've got some coal certified to have come off of the Titanic.... It has now dried out, but it is too messy for what you are doing ;-)

Seriously, you have a great concept there and some additional ideas that are worth doing.

I'll have to catch you privately and see how you are doing.

You found a "60 glass diamond"? Sixty what? Sixty mm? Sixty carats? Sixty FEET? Sixty Furlongs? Sixty POUNDS? Give me an idea of what you are working on, and I'll tell you how to make a lump of coal that will work.

Be specific.

Scott,

Don't have a size for the 3 lumps of "imitation coal" that are part of this $2.99 gag gift: http://www.hollywoodtoysandcostumes.com/You-ve-Been-Naughty-Bag-Of-Coal-Prop_15FW7671.html. Perhaps the fake coal pieces could be cut down to the size you require?

Model railway enthusiasts use a fake coal that is available in fine & course grades. Also, they use fake rocks, some of which may be right the color & size. You'll have to Google search this option.

Consider using a decorative landscaping stone like the Black Granite seen here: http://www.kafkagranite.com/decorative_landscape_stone/starlite_black_granite.php. Your local nursery or stone yard would probably give you a couple of golf ball sized pieces for a song. There are numerous types of black landscape gravel available that would serve.
Pleased to continue finding that all the world's a stage.

Get some foam rubber at your local hobby store.
Cut it into a coal shape and size.
Dye it with some RIT dye.

At this time of year stores often have a small bag of fake coal for children (or magicians) who have been bad.

Not all coal is sooty, there is different hardness of coal.

In the booklet Pretty Sneaky by Don Alan, he mentions how to prepare coal for his lump of coal production under a hat. Just give it several coats of clear spray paint. Krylon paint comes in different types of clear paint.

I have, and use, these for that very effect. I modeled my effect after a TV episode of Superman (Back in the day 1960's) where he took a lump of coal and squeezed it into a diamond.... a perfectly cut diamond at that !

I took rocks and painted them with gloss black spray paint for my coal effect. Find river rocks that are jagged and not rounded smooth.

Why not try a fireplace store? They sell fake coal that are used in flame effect gas fires, they type that glow and look like red-hot coals when the gas is burning.
