Anyone order this yet? Looks great! I've always wanted to do a smoking thumb routine. This may have to go on the x-mas list..

I was very interested until I saw the price tag. A real shame they don't sell the smoking gimmick without the glass. My guess is most of the price tag goes towards the glass, which I probably wouldn't use too often anyhow. I can't find a good smoking thumb gimmick anywhere, so I was real excited. I'm sure it's worth it, but it's a bit out of my price range. Other than that, it looks great!
Actually, even a deck of Bicycle Seconds is out of my price range at the moment.

Hi Guys,
Yes, No Smoking is expensive. We did everything in our power to keep the price down but both the development costs and the manufacturing of the props is very expensive. But there is a plus side to the release. First, the routine is non-toxic and can be done either with or without tobacco. The "smoke" from the glass is totally safe, you can breathe it all night. Puck's brilliant idea of performing this classic as a No Smoking routine has opened the doors to perform the routine in situations that were previously impossible. Puck performs the routine on a regular basis at Disney World! Two of our clients are performing the routine at school shows with some clever mods to the routine. I can guarantee you that the props we're making are a different level that anything previously released. The smoking gimmick has been fine tuned through 37 prototypes to give the performer a combination of total comfort and a gimmick that is dead easy to manipulate. The glass is all self contained and is amazing. It will produce clouds of smoke. Last, the quality of the provided "No Smoking" silk allows for a very large silk to be folded up small enough to fit in a cigarette pack yet when unfolded to easily be seen by very large audiences. No Smoking is not a pipe dream (pun intended). Puck has been performing the routine for a very long time and has done all of the research for you. The concept of the smoking thumb goes back to Laurel and Hardy. Both Ade DuVal and Fred Kaps became famous for their routines following in Laurel's footsteps. But I've never seen any pro use any form of the routine personally. I'm sure some folks did a smoking thumb routine but all of the previous solutions were very dangerous to your health. Puck has totally upgraded the work and routine to what I consider "New Classic" status because now for the first time the routine is practical and SAFE! If you're interested at all in the routine make sure you read Genii in December and Magic In January as David Oliver and John Lovick are reviewing the release. |

I just received this. I also have Velocity, the Goose, Confessions of a Needle Swallower, The Human Phone Number and this product, like all of Bob Kohler's releases is superb. I for one am glad it's expensive as this is a pro's product. The DVD is crystal clear, the gimmicks are amazing, and I can't wait to add this to my set list. I'm officially hooked on Bob Kohler products. Highly recommended. Personally, I hope everyone does not start doing this. The only reason I'm even reviewing it is because Bob is a class act. Puck, too, was very kind in my email correspondence with him. Classy guys all the way with unbelievable quality.

It took us years to finally get "no-smoking" in public places in the South, and you can still smoke in bars and casinos here, which I don't visit. I watched this you tube video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73atcLN_O0o Yes it is a beautiful performance. But I did not get the no smoking "message". The performance as is, with music, seems to be promoting smoking where it is not allowed. And it looks like he is stuffing a pipe with an illegal substance. Fist of all, it looks like he is smoking when there is a no-smoking sign right there. It looks like he is disregarding the sign and smoking anyway. (Which teaches kids a disrespect for authority). He does have a Cigarette pack. I know you can do it without the pack. But the fact that smoke is actually coming out of his mouth, kids, at least the kids I perform for, and the adults here also, will think you are smoking. People know about palming and will say he is palming a cigarette. They might not know how, but it is very hard to see this as a non smoking trick when the performer for all purposes is up there smoking. I can't believe this is the routine being performed in schools and at Disney. At least not as performed in the video demo. If I was not a magician, and did not know it was a trick, I would be offended if someone was smoking in a non smoking area. The way supervisors at schools here check on the performer, is they poke their head in the door to see if everything is under control. If they were to look in when the performer had smoke coming from his mouth, I could guarantee he would never work in the school systems around here again. This seems like it would take us back 10 years in our no smoking campaign. If performed in a proper place, like a casino or a bar, or a rock concert, I see no problem with it. I wonder how many kids that visit Disney and see this will try to imitate it by starting to smoke cigarettes. Anyone who performs this will be perceived as a smoker. There will be someone in some audience somewhere who thinks you smoke. If you are not a smoker, then you will have a hard time proving it. ACE

The ad never mentions anything about performing this in schools. I think you are reading into the trick way too much, If Disney thought the same as you I'm sure they wouldn't want Puck doing the routine. Disney doesn't seem to have a problem with it and I'm sure they are very conscientious of the sort of thing you're talking about. It's just a magic trick not a political statement, unless you put it in Penn and Teller's hands.

I confused it with what I read that Bob Kohler said a few posts above: Quote "Two of our clients are performing the routine at school shows with some clever mods to the routine." end quote. I confused this with the ad. Obviously these 2 performers are more talented than me to be able to perform it and get away with it at schools. With my style of performing and the schools I perform at, I could not get away with it. My apologies if I thought they were selling this as a no-smoking campaign. In my eyes it is not a no-smoking trick. Now as an entertainment piece, it is great. I can see Pen and Teller doing it and would probably enjoy it very much. As they are known as "the bad boys", I would laugh that they can get away with doing it, like they were breaking the rules. ACE

I believe Disney has adult only venues. (Not sure-I wouldn't be caught dead there)
As for school shows-it'd depend on how you inroduce this-it could be sold as an anti smoking routine.

For school shows the routine has obviously been changed. I don't know the particulars but I can only assume they are integrating the routine with a short speech, perhaps a lot of coughing during the routine etc.
No doubt they've figured out a way to make the gimmicks work for them in a new way. We don't have a routine that covers this included with the training. Frankly I was amazed when I heard about it but I am thrilled that creative magicians are finding new ways to successfully use our products. |

Hmmmm.....I'm sorry, I just can't see how this could be used in a school show in ANY way, shape or form!
This is NOT a knock on this trick, as this gimmick is obviously the new standard and kudos to Puck, it just would NOT be appropriate in a school show for ANYONE to be smoking, message or not, trick or NOT! Keep this for the Adults! My opinion. =Frank=
The Early Bird may get the Worm, but it's the SECOND Mouse that gets the CHEESE!!!

I thought it was painfully obvious that you are holding something throughout...maybe they don't know what, but who cares!
I think the routine is cool, though. Paul You could probably come up with a school routine where the smoke is coming off something hot, like an iron? Paul |
