I was booked for a party, got the deposit (thank god) and was looking forward to the show (the mother said her son loves magic.) Well the morning of the show, I get a frantic call that the kid's principal is forbidding the child from having magic performed at his party (let's not get into the religion aspect of this...) The mother got permission to have a 'clown' come, but I can't do anything 'magical.' Thank god I have the issue of Kidabra that had Jolly Roger's game article...and John Breeds book. I quickly made up the makings of pass the parcel and some other games, loaded a sack with stuff from my goody bags...and I was the hero of the party for the mother. The kids had a great time....but I prefer doing magic!!!! (BTW; instead of 'producing' my rabbit...I basically brought her travel case in, uncovered it...and spent 5 minutes having the kids pet her.)

Since when does a principal have control over someone's private life? This boggles the mind.

Don't ask....it's a religious school thing.

Heartbreaking - no magic. Glad you were able to recover.
Check out my new book on our 'perceptual superpowers': www.LawrenceRosenblum.com . It discusses new research on the psychology of misdirection and the neuroplasticity behind expert motor skills.

Sorry, but a private religious school has the rights to limit types of performances given on their property.

Games save the day.
In the past, improvisational games, puppets and music have done it for this nearly normal performer. It is good to have a lot of resources to draw from. Harris laughologist and nearly normal reader and "righter"

I was confused as well but can understand if it was being held at someone else's location.
I can't make the magic to devil connection though ..... sounds like we've got the makings for a good old fashioned witch hunt |

Drosenbe0813. Glad you managed to get through it. If you have anymore problems like that, take a look at my Games-Ability DVD. It has some great games that you can make up yourself for the parties.

Leaving aside the fact that games can be a life saver in certain situations, the bottom line is that the school principal was saying that you were unsuitable to entertain children, because he is a religious bigot. I find that disturbing, and I find it sad that you accepted the situation so complacently.

Ok...i'll get into this....what should I have done??? gone in there, done my usual show...and made enemies with 30 potential clients? I wouldn't be surprised if I don't get some more 'shows' out of this gig. This is a very tight community. I am not there to impose my views on them (I do think that its a ridiculous point of view...but its their point of view) ...I am the hired help. If I really didn't think that I could entertain their kids...I would have returned the deposit. My point is that you do your best with what you are handed...and that having a backup plan (i.e. games) is necessary.

I was allowed to do a catholic school "magic show" as long as the word "magic" was not said or advertised. The priest did two doctorates on the evils and history of "Magic" (Not magic tricks the sorcery kind.)
Shortly after given this news, he left our church for another parish and the new priest did not have a problem with it.

Instead of heaping all of the blame upon the Principal (one person) from the private school, you might want to consider if he actually represented the opinion of a number of parents from that school.
If someone is going to bring you into a private facility for a show, they need to clear it with the owners / managers of that facility. This is for classroom shows in schools, as well as birthday shows in restaurants. There is no reason to get up in arms about their conservative viewpoint. The school was created so they could express that viewpoint in their own way. Instead of burning energies fighting with them and arguing with them, use your energies to get shows from customers who are easier to sell to. - Donald

It was probably not because of the school, it was probably the principal only. He was probably a Jehovah Witness.

You do run into various religious groups who associate magic with the occult. I once did my show for a group of adult singles at a very large church in Grand Rapids and was told I could do the whole act (surprisingly even cards) but just could not use the term "magic".

In a case like that, you're not a MAGICian, you're an ILLUSIONist. And, as Copperfield always said, "an illusionist makes 20% more".

It's not so much an issue for me as a ventriloquist. I do a bit of magic, but it is easy to drop it from my show.
As a magician, I would have said no to the show. They hire you as a magician, and then tell you not to do what they hired you for...just a bit weird. Religious bigotry is not the issue. It is religious beliefs. There is a difference.
