My obsession with the Silk Vanishing Wand continues! I just received my order from Laflin Magic. They have a metal model for only $25.00. So I finally decided to order it. At 1st glance, it looks very nice for the price, with one feature the Plastic and German model does not have, an end cap!
From a looks point of few, I would have preferred more of the silver showing on the tip, The heavy black coating covers all the wand, except the last inch to the tips. Actually, it is a little less then an inch. Traditional wands have tips in silver, white, etc. that is usually 1.5 inches or more. Being this wand is 16.25 inches long, it looks a little odd to me, in other words out of proportion tip area verses black body area. The silk/scarf that is included with the prop is real silk and not the rayon silk mixture like the other wands supplied. Also, the silk is a 9 inch silk as compared to the 7 inch size that were supplied with the other 'Silk Vanishing Wands'. Now there is a surprise that none of the other 'Silk Vanishing Wands' have, there is an end cap/plug on the wand. Very interesting and a nice feature for those that worry about such things, as my previous handling I discribed would cover this very easily. It is something that you may lose, so keep track of it. The wand did come with a rough end where the silk enters, that may tear up the silk rather quickly, but with few very light stokes with my hobby file, they were gone. Sandpaper would work as well, just stroke very lightly. The gimmick is much like the expensive German model, and the set gimmick is heavy duty. Loflin wrote their own instructions, so there is no indication if this came from India, China, or who made it. I have not tried it yet, as I said it just came in the mail, so later I will get back to you all that are interested in the working and vanishing of a silk. All in all, I think it looks to be better then the other 2 models I talked about earlier in this thread. Stay tuned! |

Very interested in hearing your thoughts on the new model, Bill. Please keep us posted! Looking into one of these myself, as I'm getting heavily into silk magic and would love a good, clean vanish to finish.

This is real magic!
I have been playing with this new model, I believe it is made in India, but not sure. It is just as long as the German model, but the gimmick takes a little more fishing to catch it with the loader. It will vanish full size 7 and 9 inch silks just fine, but you will have to use diagonal cut 12" silks for a larger size silk. Now, I said Diagonal Cut, not Diamond Cut. This will take a little practice to get the feel for vanishing the silk. I have read complaints on the Café, that the Silk Vanishing Wand ruins the silk. That is correct, it does, but if taking some care when removing the silk, and just pull on the silk with the grain of the silk fibers, the hole disappears most of the time. I believe these same people would complain if the silk actually vanished. They would have to buy another silk for every vanish. It is only a piece of cloth, and the effect is what counts. I believe the affect of the vanish far out weights having to buy another silk every 10 times or more you use the wand. I called Richard Hughes and had him make me several different size diagonal cut silks just for this effect. I vanish a diagonal cut silk and produce a full size 12 inch silk. I gave some presentation handling tips previously, and think they work well in using the wand. Cosmetically, I do not like the small tip area, they should have had longer silver tip area showing, it would look more like a wand. If you want to visually vanish a small silk for a transposition effect, then I recommend this wand as well, if you don't mind the small silver tips. I paid $25 from Laflin Magic plus postage, but I found it at http://www.magicgoods.com/products/flash-silk-wand.php for only $18 plus postage. Look, I saved you all some money on the additional purchase of an another silk. The ad says it will vanish a 12" silk, but I have not found this to be true, only a diagonal cut 12" silk. A full size silk gets stuck. Note: If you purchase this model, wipe out the inside of the wand 1st, the gimmick is oiled and needs just a pat or 2 to get the excess oil off the gimmick. |

From a tip I got from my friend Dick Oslund, I use my metal silk-vanishing wand with either bright pink or bright turquoise 9 inch silks in conjunction with a "Demon Box".
The silk dissapears when you strike it with the wand, then re-appears inside the box. Here's a YouTube vid of the Demon Box apparatus, but I use a MUCH smaller silk then in the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETuB8AqSE50 |

Since the last post here, a couple of more versiions of the Silk Vanishing Wand have come out. So can anyone recommend the current best one available?
Thanks in Advance |

Izzy Jay, you can go back and read all my posts in this forum. I believe I have given you all the information you need. Nothing has changed, except the German Model may not be available any longer.
You made a general statement without any proof, "more versions", who, what where, did you see or read about such things. You just assume members know what you are talking about. I only fund one by Premium Magic. Murphy Magic the wholesaler to magic shops and magic websites has a new plastic model listed. Abbott's still lists the Mak-Magic model I discussed in these posts. Now read this, as I have said it many times: NONE OF THE WANDS I HAVE PURCHASED CAN HANDLE A 12" FULL SIZE OR DIAGONAL SILK SCARF. You have to do your own shopping and searching, but if you want a 12" silk, don't waste your time. If you cannot see that I put a lot of money in my research for the "Flash Wand Silk Vanish" and have given everyone my thoughts and handling for the prop. In today's magic market, it is ran more like most retail items. You buy it when it is available, because when it is sold out, it is no more. In other words, if you "Snooze you Lose". |

Bill Hegbli, I have read every one of your posts on this subject. And they have been very informative. Thank you for all that information and you research. It has definitely been appreciated. Should have been more specific. Sorry about that.
Mak-Magic has two types of this wand. https://www.makmagic.com/search.asp?filt......n=Search One plastic, which I assume is the Indian version you spoke about. The other is a metal one which I assume isn’t the German one, as you said it cost about $50, and their price for that is only $17. So I thought perhaps that’s a new version. Or not. Additionally I don’t remember (couldn’t find) any review by you on The Leveridge Silk Vanisher by Mark Leveridge. http://www.mylovelyassistant.com/products/view/6687 |

Regarding the wand from Laflin Magic, https://www.laflinmagicstore.com/Instant......isvw.htm I didn’t like the fact that the silver on the tips were so short, as you mentioned. So I was trying to see if there were other options. Price is up to $35. That’s probably a good sign.
By the way, regarding the new one by Premium Magic, https://www.murphysmagic.com/product.aspx?id=58278 Is it any good? They don’t have much of a description. |

I have to assume the Mark Leverridge Silk Vanisher is the one I mentioned came with a cap. That is how you show the wand freely. It has been while since I go them out of storage. The one I have did not come from Mark Leveridge, so he most likely was selling the one I purchased from another source. Remember I mentioned I liked this one as well.
Premium Magic is, I believe an India company. I another product with that name, and on those items the quality is poor, can't tell a book by it's cover applies here. It comes down to personal tastes, plastic wands are thicker in diameter, simply because they are made of plastic, and have to be thicker walled. As mentioned, I had to deaden the sound on the plastic Mak/Abbot version with a simple solution. The Laflin one, this version has the short tip area. I am sure it means nothing to the audience, but it works well as I mentioned. Gee, I hope I did not get ripped by our local magic shop who ordered special the metal make version for me. If I remember correctly, it was not one inch in diameter. Received an email from Laflin, they are moving their website again, I think this makes the 4th or 5th time to another site, and changing the name again as well. My only suggestion is do not buy by price, but what works. I believe I have given a complete honest review of each. There are things more import then price alone. |

To deaden the sound on the Mak Magic plastic model, simply unscrew the bottom, remove the working part.
Now get a piece of very thin card, glue a piece of felt on the card, roll the card to the inner diameter of the wand, cut and tape card, now a tube. and slip it over the gimmick to the bottom. The tube should be only about 2" in length, you will see once you have your wand. The felt is on the inside of the card tube. Now there will be no sound when the wand is activated. |
