I recently purchased a Belanger Quarter from Camirand, and it's beautifully done, using a 1987 U.S. quarter.
Now I'd like to make one or two more as backups, using some of the newer U.S. "State" quarters. I guess I could just drill a hole in the quarter, using a drill press and some oil, etc. But the accompanying DVD mentions that the Camirand version was made with a metal punch. This apparently created a slight rolled edge on one side, while leaving a fine 90-degree edge on the other side -- a really nice-looking job. So now I'm intrigued by that idea. I've worked with a cheapo leather punch before, but not a metal punch. I've seen a $30 hand-held leveraged metal punch, but I don't think it could do this sort of job -- it seems to be made for sheet metal at best. Is a hammer-driven metal punch going to be able to handle punching a hole in a U.S. quarter? And is this a dangerous procedure (flying chips, etc.) If so, is this a better job for a jeweler or perhaps a machinist or a metal shop? Any advice would be much appreciated. I posted this in the "Workshop" section of the Café, but got no responses there, so I figured I might do better here. Thanks! SETH

Thanks to a few PM's from Café members and some help from a friend with a drill press, a special vise and a few special bits, I now have a nice collection of Belanger quarters for a number of different effects.
While it wasn't complicated, it did involve some work and techniques that I wasn't familiar with, not ever having worked with metal before. Very interesting! I now have great respect for Mssrs. Lassen and Schoolcraft!! SETH

I am also interested in making a few of these gimmicks as well. Can sethb or someone else with the requisite knowledge let me know the best way to go about making these? Thanks.
