Hi Guys.
There were some very old threads trying to get this discussion going. For the most part they got derailed and talked about different lie detectors, using them in sophisticated mentalism routines, etc.

I've had my lie detector for a few years and recently reworked it into a small case. It was originally the head strainer type. Hopefully I can get it into my (adult stand up)act soon.

I am going to be using a couple(husband and wife)and hooking both up to the lie detector. The routine will be based on a card trick...possibly the wife selecting a card and the husband eventually getting the selection. Of course the questions asked leading up to the end is the best part of the entire routine.

So...I know lots of you guys are very creative, what funny questions can be asked to either husband or wife?

Here are a couple to get us started:

"Are you married?" Yes
"Happily Married?" Yes....BUZZZZ

"Are you enjoying the show?" Yes....BUZZZZ

"I love your wife's outfit, how do you think it looks on her?" Great...BUZZZZ

Hopefully we can keep this going and anyone interested can create their own routine by using questions that would relate.

Thanks James...maybe I'll tone it down a bit by asking when the last time they were "intimate".

Toning it down would be a good idea, Rich.

I like this question a lot and especially the second lead in question. Whatever their answer is the BUZZZZ would come in.

You look like you need to take off a few ounces here and there. Are you cheating on your diet?

Wanlu...thanks for chiming in after a loooooooong lull.

I purchased Robert Baxt's routine/Lines from his Lantern Lie detector. Believe it or not I'm still trying to put a routine together that I'm happy with.

Any other contributions would be greatly appreciated.

Ask a Man:
"Do you have Children?"
When the answer is "No"
Buzz
When the answer is "Yes", then follows the next Question:
"How many?"
The answer doesn't matter.

Do you deny that you have a drinking problem? OR Do you deny that you leave work early?
(Don't buzz them if they answer no)

Now, Is that you're real name?

I actually like to buzz myself when I talk about all the places I've traveled to, ending up with O.K. I never leave home (no buzz).

Do you know that you owe me a hundred dollars? (Run with it) Follow-up questions: How much is in your wallet? Are you still working at that 10 dollar an hour job? Did you clean out your wifes bank account like we planned? Did you buy me that ticket to the bahamas after I found those photos of you, online?

Do you think we are done, here?

Did you know that every time you lie that darn buzzer goes off? - If they say yes - So.. you know that you're lying on purpose... If they say no - So you just lie, all the time, even though you know you're going to get caught?

- - - -

I love asking questions that can not be answered either way without conflict. Naturally I only push the volunteer if they don't look uncomfortable, Most crowds and volunteers are ok but sometimes the routine is limited to a few questions before I reveal their selection - and let them off the hook. It's good to ask up-front who has a good sence of humor.... and if everyone is drinking, that's a good sign that you can expound. Yes, expound.

After you demo the lie detector, showing how it works and demo'ing the BUZZ! and BOING! sounds....

While escorting a lady volunteer onstage....

<in a Stage Whisper>,,,,,,"Were you a virgin when you got married?" She says "YES"

BUZZ!!!

I can see that asking a series of direct questions and buzzing them as lies might well get some laughs but it's about as unsubtle as you can get. Given the already contrived set up of the lie detector I think it would be funnier if the questions that cause you to buzz them as lies were arise from the spectators general chatty responses to the on stage banter with you. That way it will have a more natural look and I think this will make the buzzed responses look much funnier as you can now react with surprise to them as the lie detector starts working prematurely. (ie before the effect has apparently truly started.) This surprise is going to be harder to sell convincingly if you are simply blatantly asking questions unrelated to the action and plot of whatever effect you have incorporated this into or indeed if you are asking questions that are obviously pitched at getting a response you can secretly buzz.

Ask a member of the Café if they enjoy the "game" threads in the comedy section. When they say "Oh H*LL NO!" Buzz him and make him look like a fool.......LOL

IMO direct questions about a volunteer to make them look foolish is a cheap laugh - and not something a person can maintain successfully. I think this is why so many like the idea of a lie detector on paper, but find it difficult to implement in a show.

I believe the jokes should always be on me first (showing I can take a joke), then someone who is NOT the volunteer. If it is a children's party, I ask some questions about her dad. If it is an adult show I ask questions about her husband. (Yes, I always use a female volunteer.)

The questions I ask are funny, but what carries the humor is really the volunteers expressions as they think about how to answer the question. I ask leading questions hoping that the volunteer will respond in an explanation as opposed to a "yes" or "no". This works well with children who often will tell TMI...

In this way, the volunteer gets the applause, not the "clever" magician who embarrases the volunteer...

I agree completely KC Cameron!! Better to make me the fall guy than a "volunteer." They're nervous enough being involved in the effect, but then to make them look foolish on top of it? Let them have the fun, not spoil their evening!!
