Thinking about a Musical opening for my next year kid show performances I'm constructing a simple routine but I think it would work so here is:
Magician enters with a cane ( Fantasio Vanishing ) in his hand, show it to the audience and transforms it into a burst of confetti followed by two silks. ( Any idea of what to do with the silks? ) In the table is our old friend the square circle and there comes 4 silks, one red, one yellow, one green and one blue... This silks are put in a " Oriental Looking " clear tube ( Mak Silk Cylinder) bring it to the stage by the model and covered. When the lid is taked up the silks tranform into a big colored silk ( All the colors of the single silks ), with this silk I appear the cane ( A la Chimada ) that vanish in the start of the routine... So...some points, I want to be flashy or maybe with some props on stage, This is an option of a Musical Opening ( I use this year a talked one ) for my new year touring kid shows ( Librarys, Schools, Boy scouts Etc. )Remember I want to be Simple, effective and eye attracting. I don't say that this is an original idea or routine of mine, Is not neccesary to be an astronaut to put together somenthing like that...Im only asking for opinion...if some one have a similar act please let me know the experience! IM OPEN FOR ALL CONTRIBUTIONS, IDEAS, CRITICISM AND OPINIONS OF THE Café FRIENDS, Thanks, Hansel!

Hansel,
For the first two silks what about a simple tt vanish, its visual and fairly clean? Just a random suggestion |

You don't necessarily need to do anything with the two silks. You could lay them aside on your table, over a hat or a box and use them to cover a steal of something or other later on. Duane Laflin has a very interesting philosophy about routining and sequences. His basic thought is that you don't have to sequence using the tricks themselves. In other words you can make the two silks appear and put them aside , pick up another prop and do that trick, put it aside etc.

Maybe it is me, but the logical solution for me is to only have 2 silks draped over the Square circle. The other 2 silks for the square circle are from the silks produced from the cane. So you have the cane, vanish it to the 2 silks, take the 2 silks and add it to the silks for the Square Circle. This way ther transition makes sense and is smooth.

Switch your cane silks to diamond silks and put velcro on the tips. When you drape them over to grab the extra two silks from the SC, you thumb off the cane parts into the SC with no one the wiser.

Hansel: You just remove the silks from the cane pieces and ditch the cane peices. Quite easy and I do it a lot. As Eric suggested, you can get diamond cut silks as well to save on space. That can also work quite well.

Hansel, how about using the two silks to produce that dove you have on your shoulder? I produce 2 doves during my warm up. (self-contained)
I have used a 4-minute warm up to music for years and think its very important for many reasons. It does not have to be anything spectacular really, and as others have pointed out you don’t have to have every move make perfect sense. Just throw a lot at them with energy and personality. The idea is to give you audience a sense of awe right from the beginning. Send a signal to them that this is going to be a good show and you don’t want to miss out. I will sometimes over hear kids saying, “Wow, this is a real magician.” Bingo! That’s half the battle in entertaining children, getting their respect, and when you can do it in the first 4-minutes, you can enjoy performing for them the rest of the show---usually .

As a routine, its fine, but this is kids shows. That usually means limited setting up time, kids knocking over your props and trying to steal them, and parents talking while the food is being served at the same time you start your show.
I think the routine as it sounds will be to cumbersome to set-up at each kids show. Far too long to reset between shows, especially if you have 4 shows that day. It doesn't interact with the children or make them laugh. Magic to music is fine, but you have to simplify the tricks so that the routine is actually performable at the shows you are doing. David Ginn tries doing magic to music in his kids shows. Some of his routines are okay so may be best looking at the tricks he does and going from there. |

Thanks Guys:
Ken: So good to see you, having time I don't read any of you ( Good guys as Ken and Kyle are vanishing from the Café? ) Well, the idea of the dove is very nice, but I use my dove as the End of the show. As a closing is very nice and if the kids want to go up to the stage to touch the bird etc its ok...Even is a very nice and interesting idea. Ku7uk3: For all the things that you mentioned at the first of your post if what I want to do a musical opening...usually I Talk and say jokes but they don't work very well because the talk of the parents, the food etc...As a Warm up I prefeer music. As always very good comments and I really appreciate them. Thanks for all the Imput guys, Hansel!

I started using a musical opener a couple of years ago, and it has been great. With a series of visual tricks, it establishes me as a magician early. Which is important for me, since most of the rest of the show is pretty silly. And you can definitely get a lot of comedy out of silent magic too such as the repeating sponge balls (or eggs) from the mouth. I found a little stereo CD player at Wally World for $20 that sits in my table for small events like birthdays. I sometimes close to music, but have decided that a stronger ending is getting the kids more involved yelling the magic words as loud as they can. It's nice for parents to see kids still super-attentive after 40 minutes.

A warm-up routine I've enjoyed includes some music in the background with three independent warm-up tricks which sit in a top hat on my table. I say warm-up trick number... the kids are then cued to yell one. this continues for each of the three warm-up tricks.
I don't always use music, though. Instead of saying warm-up trick number..., I sometimes tell the kids I will vanish something and they need to say "no way John"when prompted. I proceed with "I am going to make the bottle vanish". They yell, "No way, John." This continues for three tricks. Some of the warm-up tricks I've used are: dye box darryl's red/white ropes (jumping knot of Pakistan) vanishing pop bottle vanish of a silk, and then a wand with silk reappearing I sometimes incorporate a gag too. This has worked well. There is magic, fun, and interaction. John |

Hansel wh y not produce the 2 silks form flash string or flash paper (unless you don't want to use fire) then take them and do an instant blendo to a half dyed silk then take off the (hilarious magic of sam sandler) gloves to streamer and produce t he streamer then put that in the SC or coffe vase adn move forward from there.
The idea is to be flashy inthe first few moments this does indeed set the tone for the rest of the show. don't be afraid to turn the music up jsut a bit if you find people talking however I believe that if you can inthe first 30 seconds set teh tone parents talking wont be a problem. good luck and have fun sam
