This is just my simple but heartfelt and public way of saying "Thank-You" to Aldo Colombini for helping me move beyond simple gimmicked packet tricks to non-gimmicked ones. This is not to say the former are bad, but being able to perform a packet trick with a clean set of cards, pulled from a clean deck was a big hurdle for me and made me feel GREAT!!
I am fairly new to magic so I had to learn double lifts (still working to perfect them), Elmsley counts, false cuts, taking a hidden break in a deck, etc etc. While I'm still no where near accomplished in all these things, by purchasing some of Aldo Colombini's packet trick DVD's, I got some great material and tips to improve and gain confidence. (I have some books too, but it helps me to see it done vs reading about it.) I find his humour and enthusiasm to be very motivating. Rather than assume you know everything, he covers the effect well by explaining how to do it thoroughly. For a mere $10.00 for the first DVD I purchased, right away I got several useful and fairly easy to do "clean" packet tricks out of the 10 shown. I practiced them and was able to perform them within days to a number of people. My confidence grew, my enthusiam grew, and I went on to try harder effects. I now have 4 of his packet trick DVD's and my little library of packet tricks I can perform with a regular deck of cards grows. I'm sure many reading this would have lots of other sage advice on books, DVD's, people to learn from, etc., and all would be welcome. But I hit upon Aldo first and am glad I did. So he's kind of my hero right now... Anyway, I just wanted to say in a public forum- Thanks Aldo!! |

If you enjoy packet tricks you may also want to check out the book "Focus" by Phil Goldstein/Max Maven.
Tons of excellent stuff. Aldo's "True Magic" DVDs are great as well.

I had the great privilege of having Aldo teach me personally. Back in the mid 90s, I traveled to California, where Aldo welcomed me into his home every day for a week, and we would spend about 12 hours together each day (with only a couple of short breaks to eat), he the teacher, and I the student. It was absolutely wonderful. I am proud to call him my mentor and my friend.
Aldo's magic is great, and he's a great guy.

I enjoy Aldo Colombini's magic enormously too. In additon to taking up the recent offer for several dvds for $10 each, many years ago I picked up 'standing room only' which has some very good material on it - and I became an instant admirer. About 18 months ago I acquired the 3 volume series 'The Essential Colombini' which is a wonderful set. I would heartily recommend it.
Not only does Aldo come out with strong magic that is direct and commercial, I enjoyed & benefitted from his approach & comedic style too. He seems a very warm and likeable performer and a good example of how this can help in one's magic. Whilst one can somewhat cast the L&L crowd as a rather 'easy' audience, I have no doubt his reception from them on the 'Essential Colombini' set was very genuine. Even the L&L audience can be slightly muted in their responses to every routine a magician performs - but they seemed to genuinely love everything that Aldo did it seems to me.

I got to spend a little time with Aldo and Rachel at a conference last year and they were warm and gracious with their time. Aldo is hilarious. I've started to acquire quite a few Columbini routines on his packet trick DVDs and else where. What's Up Deck is a great book and is loaded with killer material. I really like his thinking.

Aldo is a great guy. He and Rachael did the Magic Convention in Tampa a couple of years ago and they were a great act. Aldo did a nice 3 Ring routine, and great rope routine and He and Rachael did a very nice comedy Mentalist routine that had us rolling on the floor laughing.
If you can book him for a lecture or a convention in your city I highly recommend them. TC |

Aldo is a great guy and very entertaining. Glad to hear you're moving to regular cards. I'm not mudch of a gaff person either ...but don't completely overlook them, the reaction I get with Aldo's Paramount is incredible!

Chappo-
Thanks. Somedays it might be more like flops and falls, but what fun anyway! BTW, I did get a copy of "What's Up Deck?" as suggested earlier in this topic. While I haven't gone thru it cover to cover, there does seem to be a lot in there for beginners as well as experts. I'll focus on the basic skills for a while longer and the book has lots of help in regards to that. I recently got in touch with Aldo and he sent me an autograph which will adorn the inside cover of the book. |

Lets not forget Rachel too. Both of them recently lectured at our Ring 96 in Long Beach, Ca.
Rachel performed a trick and I need more info about it later in the week when I tried to do it. I sent her an email and she responded within 24 hours. When some people are selling one trick for $40.00, we can appreciate Aldo and his $10.00 materail. |
