I love this new effect from Paul Harris. Though it's been discussed in other areas of the Café, performers who obviously don't do kid shows have made those threads completely unconstructive. So, anyone have any little touches we could add to this? Here are some of my initial thoughts: I'm considering a mentalism effect for family groups with this. I will make a clay pirate, and am looking for some good gags and story. I may have him find a piece of treasure chosen by a kid. At the end of the effect, the kid keeps the treasure AND the little pirate (or possibly I'll roll the pirate back into a ball of clay before giving it to the kid). Potty |

I wouldn't give away the clay. It'll get trodden into the carpet by the end of the show.

I'll be using it for walkabout magic, so I'll walk away and leave them to do what they want with it! No carpets in the Cafés I'll be working.
Would it be too much to add a strand of hair and do a "voodoo" presentation? I have several "Caribbean Santero Voodoo" effects which older kids enjoy. How about combining it with "Dark Museum" (Doug Higley)? The clay pirate can always find the chosen object - monkey's paw, dried fingers, or shrunken head. |

Potty, I enjoy reading your posts...and I know you asked for no negative comments on this thread, but do you think this is a good effect for strolling magic? It doesn't seem like it would be practical for these venues. At least for the type I perform in.
Again, I thought the effect itself was good...maybe for friends and family or special situations. Rich B. |

Rich, that's far from being negative. That's an important point. I've already considered this - obviously the kit is a little too large to carry from table to table. I will leave a box with a few "special" props behind the Café counter, and fetch them when I'm in the mood, the group is right, and certainly when we're filming.
Little Man should work well for beside magic in hospitals as well as kid-shows. I can imagine having a great routine, possibly including some balloon modelling, even venting a voice or other sound effect. |

I would bet strolling magicians will find a way to incorporate this, even if it takes a new approach to the "equipment". LM is likely to be the beginning of some really good and different things in magic...

I mentioned in the other topic a good presentation idea for this. At least I think so. Paul likes to create those astonishment moments. He does this by maybe having an innocent looking "prop" already laying around. He walks up and does something with it, and leaves it with them.
Ok. To do this with littleman. Maybe have little canisters of play doh at each table or in the playroom where kids are already playing with it. Pass out play doh at the beginning of a Birthday party... It would be up to the creative magician to take it from here. I am just setting the stage... I walked into my Granddaughters house the other day, and she was sitting on the floor playing with play doh. She is 6. It would have been great if I already had little man and could have sat down with her and performed it. ACE

I like some of the creative thoughts being shared here. Keep them going!
Using your idea Acecardician, this might work good for those who perform in hospitals for sick children too. Have the Candystripe girls come in first with clay and have the children make things with it. I'm sure one of them will make a little man with some of the clay. You can casually walk in and remark on the little man and ask what makes us different from clay people. You can then reply a heart if no one answers. Then ask someone to make a heart and place it on little man, and whalah!

Waste of time and effort for children - they're not going to understand or appreciate the effect IMO.

Which particular kids are you thinking of, because every child I've ever met would understand and appreciate it. Or was that a joke? I already perform a similar animation effect for kids in a walkabout setting, and I can assure you that this type of effect is the one the kids will talk about in the playground for weeks or months afterwards. Should play well for kids from 2-102! Potty |

Well I did not do it, so I will never know. But I know how she thinks. And I've done lots of other effects and she loves them! Imagine kids sitting on the floor playing with doh. My Granddaughter actually made a little doh man. If I sat on the floor and started playing along with her, and then made one and he started walking, just to see the look on her face would have been worth a million dollars! She is used to me sitting there on the floor playing along with her. Properly presented, I can see kids loving this. ACE

Period! And he won't have to put one leg in front of the other to "prove" that he walks in a proper manner. |

I can see where Futureal is coming from. I'm not 100% sure this will blow kids away.
Sure we can all list our credentials and state whether it will or won't work but has anyone here actually tried it? I have to say when I read the description of the effect I was blown away, when I saw the video I was more "hmm, that's cute". |

OK..This post was inspired by Robert M. I had given my share of negative feedback in a previous thread voicing my disappointment in certain aspects of the effect. So here is what I originally had thought of for the basic theme for my patter with Little man.
I will not type out word for word patter but the basic introduction to my presentation was to go something like this. I would start a conversation about the age old debate about the origins of life. Whether you believe in evolution or creationism, there are some aspects that both beliefs actually are not that different from one another. For instance. Whether you support one belief or the other, one of the common thread is that life came from the ground. Mudd...The Earth, Clay (insert jokes when introducing the clay-dough). Your choice of patter while assembling whatever character you chose, is pretty open. I would talk about how The Bible does not negate the fact that our physical forms have changed, adapted...or evolved through the years. You can hand out the clay...and have fun making different shapes...and making small talk about various descriptions of human stages of evolution that we have been taugh in school. Eventually I would get to the point where I would be suggestive. Directing them to make it in shapes of a more basic morder man form. I would go on to point out that no matter how we were physically made...no matter what it was that formed our bodies, no matter what shape they were originally formed into...(start to assemble clay body parts). Whether it was the shape of a modern looking man...or a prehistoric looking man. Whether it was formed through nature or formed by a God,or possibly many Gods....or even it we were just created by a chance meeting of all the right ingredients (then put the pieces together)...just the combination of these ingredients have never been proven, in a labratory, to work. There is still something missing. In other words C+L+A+Y does not always equal life. No one can create it out of just clay. Staring at the motionless clay figure just standing. If you believe in magic, if you believe in the magic of nature or the magic evolution. Whether you believe in creationism...something else is needed other than the just the shape of a man made from Earth. In Genesis it teaches that man was formed from the ground, in the image of God. But he was without life. Until God breathed life into his nostrils. Demonstrating to us through those words, that there was an element missing other than just "clay" in order for life to actually begin. What was that breath of life? Does science have you believe it was simply luck of the galaxy? Religion will have you believe it the power of God? Maybe it is a little of both. One thing is still evident. In the beginning, no matter how basic. I something else was involved that even today, we have no way to measure....not yet. If you are a smoker you could chose to take a drag of your smoke of choice at this time....then for effect. Blow it onto little man as you are "breathing life" into him/her. That was a basic idea for some patter I had written originally before seeing the video. After watching the video....I really liked the idea of a reveal, especially with him moving to the object and rotating to point to it. |

Many complain about the price tag. I think everyone was expecting Mr. Bill to pop out of the can with a new heart, given to him by "The Wizard" - Pun intended. But alas it is a clay man scooting across a bag - Oh noooo - oh no - ohhhhhhh Mr. Bill.
That said I think it is a fantastic effect that will spark the imagination of many children. I know if I seen this at 5 years old I would have been mesmerized beyond belief. And it's giving that reaction to a child that is worth every penny. Priceless... - My Thoughts
