OF COURSE! While travelling around on vacations with my parents, my favorite places to stop were "Stuckeys" stores. They always had a whole spinning upright rack of Adams things. I still have several. In original packaging, of course!

In 2002 Wm. V. Rauscher, author of many books about magic and magicians, published an entire book devoted to S.S. Adams and his products. Titled "S.S. Adams, High Priest of Pranks and Merchant of Magic" I'm sure it is still in print.

Of course I remember the SS Adams Company. My introduction to magic was section 793.8 in my grade school library, but the first "real" magic props I had were those contained in the "Adams Hocus Pocus Magic Set" I received for Christmas when I was eight years old.
I first learned the shell game using a set of Adams shells. My dad used to trot me out to perform it for his various business associates when he would have them over for dinner. I still have a few of the tricks that came with that magic set and the original instructional booklet as well. Call me sentimental... |

There is also a book by Kirk Demairis called Life of the Party that has a lot of S.S. Adams history.

I still remember the unique smell the "smoke" from fingers had!

I remember the smell. I also remember the yucky sticky feeling it left on my fingers that I had to scrub and scrub to get rid of. It's best left in the past.

Ah, yes! That tacky feeling on the fingers as I would rapidly open and close them to make more and more "smoke!"

Gosh, that really brings back memories..... Yucky sticky stuff between your thumb and middle finger that was supposed to look like smoke!
What fun, back then. |

Sam Sorensen Adams made so much money from selling the JOY BUZZER (hand shake "vibrator") that he named his yacht: THE BUZZER.
He was a "pioneer" employer of physically handicapped persons. I remember a handicapped guy who made "Doggie Poo". I wish I had a nickel for every penny to dime (with the little red block)that I sold when I helped out behind the counter in the old EdMar Magic Shop in Norfolk, VA!. Someone had shown me a 'sucker move' that really made it a big seller. (I can't even remember the move, anymore!)

Yeah I had a ton of them and still got the dime and penny, Peter Rabbit sponge rabbits, magic sticks, color vision box, TT, and a few others. I also started out with the Adam's Magic set around age 6 when my friend floored me with the ball vase and I bought the set from him for $3.00 which was like $30.00 then lol. Still got most of the parts from it and might buy it new on eBay again if not too much.
The great trouble with magicians is the fact that they believe when they have bought a certain trick or piece of apparatus, and know the method or procedure, that they are full-fledged mystifiers. -- Harry Houdini

Jon Racherbaumer did a large format hardcover book on Ed Marlo's handlings of S.S. Adams effects called "Arcade Dreams." Some nice stuff in there. I particularly liked his "Poor Man's Linking Rings" which also appeared in TOPS much earlier.

Your not going to believe this, I know I didn't. Remember the Adams Ball and Vase, the plastic thingy that sold for something like .50 cents when I was a kid back in the forties.
There is one on the Old Magic Props website selling for, wait for it.... $75.00 http://www.oldmagicprops.com/rareCollectiblesPg13.htm actually its for 6 of them, but still....

That could be in line price wise for 6... I have paid up to around $20 for a set of their Cups and Balls to get a box color that I did not have.
When I was a kid I think the originaly sold for $1.50 each for the Cups.... I rember the Ball and Vase selling for $1.00. Bruce |

Magic Makers Inc. purchased the S.S. Adams company and remaining stock, when Adams went out of business. They are still selling a very limited selection of the original line on their website. I would assume when they get time they will produce the line for wholesale to stores.

I liked the disappearing ink. Squirt some on your mom's blouse and a few minutes later, it's gone. What was that made from?
