I think most folks would agree Mike Close is a master at creating and routining magic, as Mike would say "to fool the smartest person in the room". His Workers serious is legendary and now after a very long wait, he's made 2 new DVDS.
http://www.llpub.com So, sit back, relax, and get ready to have a great time. Getting fooled was never so much fun. DEVIOUS - VOLUME ONE Set 1 (From the Houdini Lounge) The Trick Lance Burton Showed Me - A great version of the six-card repeat that demonstrates what happens when you never stop thinking about a trick. A Presentation for the Plants Magnetized Cards - A hilarious presentation for one of the great close-up/parlor routines. The Luckiest Cards in Las Vegas - One of Michael's favorite routines, and one of the most baffling. This is a true reputation maker. Set 2 (Some Closely Guarded Secrets) The Dumbest Casino in the World - A logical and deceptive version of The Chicago Opener, with a presentation and method that you've never seen before. The Shuffles Routine - One of the workhorses of Michael's repertoire, and a routine he has used for more than forty years. Full of laughs and subtle touches. Set 3 (With a Little Extra Work) Now That's a Coincidence - An impossible coincidence that gives you a tactical advantage in a very sneaky way. The Trick that Fooled Houdini...and His Whole *** Family - Michael has taken in magicians around the world with this little gem. The secret will make you laugh out loud. DEVIOUS - VOLUME TWO Set 1 (For Casual Performances) The Way of the Duck - A fresh presentation for an amazing revelation of two freely selected cards. The Matching Miracle - An Ed Marlo routine streamlined by Harry Riser. Harry's Faro Trick - Harry Riser had forgotten about this amazing card discovery. It was published in M-U-M, but has never appeared on video. Set 2 (G.C. Extravaganza) Red See Passover - Michael's presentation and handling of Simon Aronson's great effect. A Handling for Dean and Weber's A New World - Michael's approach allows for an effect that no other version can duplicate. Dancers at the End of Time - A classic from Workers 2. Brother John Hamman's Underground Transposition takes a side trip through the Twilight Zone. Set 3 (A Lesson in Routining) Sideswiped - Another great Simon Aronson effect. The Bammo Deck Walloper - Michael's handling of this effect is so good, it fooled Bob Farmer, who (along with Gerald Kirchner) created it. Set 4 (Magician Foolers) Vernon Would Have Liked This - A very natural and elegant handling of an Ambitious Card effect. Bedwell Meets Findley - An unusual combination of moves produces a stunning card control. The Stewart James Prank - A lesson in how to punk your pals.

I guess you just the newsletter too!
L&L is also giving away Marlo's Miracle Routine featuring Bill Malone, which looks like a great routine. Free with a $50 purchase, so you can't beat that, especially getting a pre-publication deal on the Close DVDs! They also have a couple of new World's Greatest Magic DVDs - The Ambitious Classic looks great and Professor's Nightmare. I love the WGM DVDs, even with something like Professor's Nightmare that I've been doing for over 30 years. I always pick up something new! But the Close DVDs look great. I own some of the gaffs for the routines and am anxious to see what Michael does with them. Plants' gaff for The Magnetized Card is great! |

In that clip, the final revelation has two very similar cards ( 8 and 10 of clubs ). It seemed to create a so-so moment. Is it best to force cards so that they are contrasting?
I like Dan Fleshman's "Momma in my wallet" version more. Just my opinion.

L&L has the video demos for all their releases on their home page so you don't have to go hunting around YouTube for them. The free Malone DVD looks great as does the Ambitious Classic.

Normally I would agree with the sentiment about card tricks, but I'll pick these up because Mike's stuff is always good.
Apart from his discussion board obviously. |

On first look, it appears that there is a huge overlap with his CD that had the embedded video clips. I'll have to dig it out but I recognize most of those trick titles from the CD he put out years ago. I'm sure seeing live performances is worth the purchase anyway and I love his stuff...I was just excited for new material.

Mike teaches the effects, but if it was just a performance set, it would be worth it. When someone is this good, you can learn so much by watching them.
You just know the set is going to be popular and the reviews wonderful. He simply does not release/share anything less than A material.

I thought Mike was too busy to contribute to and maintain his 'forworkersonly' forum that people paid good money for.
He's obviously not too busy to produce a new set of DVDs to rake in even more ££££. I think 'Devious' is an apt name for this set. I hope his forum members are given a discount on the DVDs to make up for their let down. |

I have been a fan of Mike Closes MAGIC for years. (Other things, no so much). Here are my thoughts.
I have Closely Guarded Secrects, much of which encompasses these sets. I really like the video embedded into the PDF, and I thought that was a great way of doing business; especially if you consider Closes' opinion on making things "your own", and not just doing what is on a video. That being said, I think that performances alone are worth a great deal, if a person can look at a performance as an inspirational piece, not a place to clone an act. (On a side note, I see that Sinful is being re-released as a book with a performance DVD, I like this idea greatly as well, I think there are many good effects lost in pages of books, because people have never seen them performed, so the effects are passed over.) I saw Close perform Gary Plant's Rising Card in Vegas. I immediately bought the effect, and think that he always has the ability to routine, not only his effects, but other's as well. His mixing of Side-Swiped and Bammo Card Wallopper is excellent. On that note I am looking forward to his routines for New World and Red See Passover. That being said, I may have to get on the preorder, I am all about saving money, especially when I have much of the material already. There is just enough new material for me that I will pick these up. I am disappointed in hearing Andi's words on the forworkersonly forum, I had a feeling it was going to end up that way, especially for a yearly fee.

Im a big fan om Mr Close card world.
His thinking goes beyond and "out of the box" when it comes to cards. Mr Close´s patter is smooth and entertaining, yes, its a joy to watch him do his weird world of amazing card effects. I meet & saw M. for first time at a swedish convention; Magic Weekend (early 90s) and that was a nice experience - this man was something special, sure. Nice offer: "Pre-release price for the 2 DVD Set- Only $60. Regularly $70.00. Special pre-release price ends January 29th" |

I should add that M Close not only has great material but also his material is really top notch. Very well explained with much details, thoughts on theory and pattens. His CGS is a pleasure to read, for sure that these 2 DVDs must keep the same quality.

Hi. Question: is this only for THE hardcore card magician or is this material also to do for a not so experienced card man? Thx. Arturo

Farrow and mem-deck stuff aside Mike's card stuff generally isn't knucklebusting stuff.
