Pete:
I know that you are one of the top photographers in magic. I also know that you are extremely well known for photographing race cars. Which is more fun to photograph, a Ferrarri or Jinger?

Well Bill, first of all, thanks for the kind words.
Actually I have photographed both... Ferraris and Jinger. The latter, was a treat. When I got the assignment, Mark Kalin (Mr. Jinger) called to set up the schedule. He would pick me up at the Reno airport and we'd go to their theater where his props were set up. It was an off day for the show, but Jinger and Mark were so organized I couldn't believe it. It was like they knew how long each photo set-up would take and what was needed. Everything went like clockwork. They even had assistants coming and going as needed, and in makeup and costumes, with changes, etc. all for each Illusion photo shoot. It was great fun and we got some exciting pictures. Now as to the Ferrari's... actually it wasn't a Ferrari shoot that was the most fun. It was an Aston Martin. I forget which James Bond film it was, but Bond had a specially fitted Aston with all kinds of crazy weapons and special gear. To promote the film in the U.S.A they sent the car over to San Francisco and asked me to do a photo shoot for the cover of Road & Track magazine. The location I settled on was on Lombard Street. If you are not familiar with Lombard street it is a very short street but winds up a hill like a snake. One problem was it was a One Way street going down the hill. From the top, looking down was the best shot, and it had a San Francisco landmark, Coit Tower, visible in the background. I didn't want to show the rear end of the Aston, so on a Sunday morning I got all set at the top and talked the driver into starting at the bottom and driving up the WRONG WAY... Which he did. We got a great shot and left the place before anyone even noticed we were there and had run up the wrong way on the cities most famous street.

WOW!!!!
Seriously, I wouldn't have expected less from Mark and Jinger. I remember seeing Mark perform when he had just won some kind of award for the billiard table act. Then I saw them both at Magic Live! a couple of years ago. Incredible! That Aston Martin must have been a hoot to shoot. I think that one of the most important aspects of being a photographer is the ability to "see" the shots that the customer wants in a way that captures the essence of the thing that is being photographed so that the viewer sees not only the aspects the customer wants them to see, but the spirit of the object being photographed. Looking at that last sentence, I realize it's rather convoluted. But I think you know what I mean. There was a photographer in Houston named Murray Getz, who could photograph a Xerox machine and make it look sexy. He did my first major photo shoot and composite. I've known a couple of guys like that. I don't have that kind of eye.

Reminds me... a pre-Jinger Kalin story. The two of us were booked for an out-of-town gig. He was still just doing his Billiard Act. Which was awesome, by the way.
Mark was a bit worried on the outbound flight, expressing concern about his props, would the airline lose them? Would they damage them? Good concerns. On the way home, Mark asked me, "After seeing my act, do you have any suggestions?" I said, "Yes, work it out so that you NEVER work with any act that won't fit in the airline carry on rules." Boy, am I glad he didn't listen to me!!!

That's true. Fitting Jinger into the overhead would be very difficult!
