Hello everyone,
I posted a little while back saying asking for some trick ideas. I'm performing magic as my talent in a male beauty pageant for charity next Friday (the 26th). Right now my act is: -Vanishing Shot Glass -Levitator by Theater Magic (card levitation) I have 3 minutes total, and I'd like to throw one more trick in there. I found a couple kits from when I was younger but after flicking through all of the tricks included nothing really caught my attention. Since I only have a week, the most important thing is that its fairly easy to learn. I was looking on Penguin Magic in particular since they have a large selection of "instant download" tricks. Can anybody recommend any of these, or something similar? Ideally, it'd serve as a good finale but anything will do just to round out my act. |

A whole week is very short to get a routine to performance standards. at least that is my experience.
don't know if your character can pull it off, but if I where in your situation I would go for some easy selfworking mentalismstuff, maybe clip line by richard osterlind (edit: that's the source I found it, the original is by spackman I believe) but then again, I'm a novice magiciian. maybe someone else has a better idea

Since you have 3min only to fill, you might give the good old "Professor's Nightmare" trick a chance. All you need is 3 pieces of rope. It's visual, it's easy, and done properly, it's deceptive. I hate to state this, but I am sure you will find some instruction video on youtube. Not the source I would recommend normally...

Dream Queen. It's only $5.00 and you can play it up real big. I have done it for big crowds but if it's an auditorium it's probably too small. It's a mentalism trick and you can really milk it. Silk streamer and tip. Wrap a dollar around your thumb and pull the cone off.Proceed to pull it slow for maximum effect. Mismade rope with a repeat change bag. Mouth coil dilemma.

3 whole minutes? Gee I dunno. So much room to fill after those first two bits.
I'm stumped.
You know why don't act naive.

Hey everyone,
Thanks for all the ideas so far I'll be checking out all of these throughout today. I know its far from ideal to be trying to get something down in a week. I've been practicing my levitator a lot though and now I'm doing it with LED's attached to the card, it makes it really look cool. I may be able to milk that out a bit to get to my total time, but I'm not sure two tricks alone seems like enough. Is anybody familiar with the levitator trick I'm talking about? http://www.theatremagic.com/ If any of you are familiar with it, would you be comfortable with it being the anchor of a 3 minute act? |

3 minutes is not a lot of time. I would open with something flashy, maybe a coin/cap to bottle, or even a lame production of a streamer from a change bag. A mouth coil would even make a good opener. Then finish with your other two effects.

You could try Hummer card trick, or two dollars window. It's an instant download.

Seeing some one walk on with a pack of cards and one of them starts to move then stands up. Then the magician take control and makes that card fly around through hoops and stuff. Yeah that’s a great 3 mins.
You could add a small bit of D-lites if you can find them to match your LED. I think the Professor nightmare is the way to go or egg bag. These are 1 trick 3min no set up carry small plays big. To answer your question for a final walk on with a cane and at the end wrap it in news paper and vanish. I think if your good at The Levitator that’s the one you should use an the only one.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

Do only one trick. The key is to create a routine around it. A mini story or some other way to create motivation.
I watched a couple of YouTube videos recently from America's Got Talent. One was titled something like "worst magician on America's Got Talent." The guy planned out a musical routine that was a lot of tricks in a short time. He bombed. The point is to get the audience to care enough about you to want the trick to succeed, since there's only a limited amount of time. He wanted to amaze, but he never got them to care first. The other was a video response called "best magician on AGT." One trick. Fantastic trick. But the thing that made it worth watching was that the performer didn't come out with a big attitude and expect everyone to swoon. He came out, was a really nice guy, started his routine, and gave us the fakeout (misdirection) that let the dirty work happen. Result? When the magic happened, everyone was blown away. There are folks who can do a really simple and cliche trick in a way that blows everyone away. Check out Whit Haydn's videos (do a google search) for his Teaching the Classics act. He does four tricks. Four. Fills half an hour. And even though I have watched that video at least a dozen times I love to watch it again and again. Not to figure out the tricks. I know how all four are done. For me, it gets better and better because of looking for the subtleties of his presentation. He spends almost 9 minutes on his cut and restored rope routine. He only cuts it three times and still I am riveted the whole way through. Why? Because the trick is all about Haydn. He uses it as a way to show what an interesting person he is. Even if he isn't, which I doubt to be the case. You have three minutes? Pick one trick. Find a motivating story for it. Make the audience interested NOT IN THE TRICK, but in something much more important. Make them interested in YOU. The trick is your vehicle for getting that interest, for showing them that you are an interesting person. Amazing them is great, but even more important is dazzling them. Personal example: My rope routine is all about how my mother taught me to tie knots. The point is to be interesting by talking about my wonderful and supportive mother. What does your trick say about you? -Patrick |

You could always do some thread work. Maybe pick up a package of Yigal Mesika's loops and start moving stuff around on stage without "touching" them. Real easy to learn, and you can play it up big.
The performance is what really makes it all worth while.
