Has anyone come up with different explanations for the telling of fortunes on the package.

Something a little more appropriate for the 4 to 9 year old range and if you did how did you incorporate it ?

Thanks

Don:

I used the Fortune Telling Fish in one of my Library Show routines 2 years ago, and I also gave every child one after the show. I, too, changed the "fortunes" from the ones written on the package... Here are the ones I used:

Head Moves . . . . . . . . .Very Smart
Tail Moves . . . . . . . . .Your Feet Stink
Head & Tail Move . . . . . .You’re in Love
Sides Curl . . . . . . . . .Talented
Fish Turns Over . . . . . . Charming Personality
Curls Up Entirely . . . . . Passionate
Fish Is Motionless . . . . .Dead Fish

I always made a point to read out the meanings of the various motions during the show... making appropriate faces/gestures can add to the humor for the kids, too... it always got great reactions. Feel free to use these if you wish, or to change them however you want.

Hope this helps!

Fish is motionless....Fish is asleep, shhhhh!

I've also changd the label different motions mean read different type of book (EX: biography, fiction, non-fiction etc.) Great for reading shows.

I use these:

Head Moves . . . . . . . . .You're a Great Person
Tail Moves . . . . . . . . .You're a Sneaky Person
Head & Tail Move . . . . . .You’re in Love (but I always read this one last)
Sides Curl . . . . . . . . .Everybody loves you
Fish Turns Over . . . . . . You like eating brussel sprouts
Fish Doesn't Move . . . . . You like watching Spongebob Squarepants

Here's what I use, printed onto an Avery "30 Up" label (3 rows of 10 labels)

Moving Head – You’re Funny
Moving Tail – You’re Serious
Moving Head and Tail – You’re Smart
Turns Over – You’re in Love
Motionless – You’re Sleeping
Curling Sides – You’re Creative
Curls Up Completely – You’re Popular

For the record (should someone ask) these little wonders work on moisture, not body heat. They are long-strand polymers that actually GRAB water molecules on the side of the direct contact. It doesn't absorb, it just grabs. One side swells up with the added volume of water and curls just like a bi-metallic strip with heat. Prove it yourself by placing one on a damp sponge and a dry paper towel. I give them as part of my school science-guy package to teach the five stages of the scientific method.

Wow, I learn something new every day here! I always thought they worked by body heat. Thanks for clearing that up Skip.

But it's a lot easier to simply say they work by "body heat", rather than having to provide a paragraph of explanation. Smile

I've pretty much stopped using the fortune telling fish. I find the kids throw them out pretty quickly, even if you build them up with a routine. I used to include my business card in the sleeve with the fish, but found so many fish and cards became trash, I just stopped. What I use instead are the two-card monte sets. The kids tend to keep these, and I can still insert my business card into a sleeve that I buy at a local crafts store.

I always like to mention to the crowd that these fish are totally eco-friendly, made from 100% all natural, recycled petroleum by-products.

Great thread! How about "Falls on floor: You are a heavy breather" Smile

Do you guys print these fortunes out on a small coin envelope, or something else? I just started using the Fortune Telling Fish, and I have to say I'm super impressed. I use them either before or after the show for some extra moments of magic. So far I've found that they curl up entirely a lot and the "In Love" fortune for a young child is super funny.

I'm looking forward to using some of the above suggestions in the future. Thanks guys.

I used 2x4 printer labels to print the fortunes. They fit the envelope well. Look for the ones that block what's underneath, you can stick it right over the fortunes on the package they come in. It works great!

Best Wishes! - Kevin
