I’m working on a new routine that I want to feature about 10-12 well known shows or movies with a clear magic theme. Just a few that I quickly thought of were:

Most recently, as far as movies, you have The Illusionist and The Prestige. Mork and Mindy was based on Mork's being from outer space, but some of his "powers" could be connected to a magic show, i.e. he would drink liquids with his finger, which could certainly be referenced in any disappearing liquid effect - e.g. Mork proved you don't HAVE to drink it with your mouth to make it disappear. The T.V. show Charmed.

The show "the wizard" oddly was about a gadgeteer and not a magician, but there was a show that ran one season called "Mr Merlin" about a wizard training a teen age boy.

I vaguely remember one about an embittered stage magician in which Ben Kinngsley turns in a horrid I'm-only-here-for-the-paycheck performance. Just can't remember the title.

Its a sad fact of UK tv that we don't get characters like that on our news programmes - some blather about unbiased reporting ( which must irk the lefties at the BBC)- also the inherent sense of fairplay and tolerance that still exists in the majority of the folk in the UK would mean that, if someone like O'reilly ever turned up on a news programme, he'd be taken out and hanged by the general populace quicker than the Hartlepool monkey. |

There were several macabre Japanese movies based on the books of famous Japanese mystery author Edogawa Rampo. The protagonist is detective Akechi Kogoro, and his recurring nemesis is a master criminal called the Man of Many Faces, so-called due to his mastery of disguises. This master criminal is also an illusionist, as I still remember one film where he performed Cups & Balls.
