Hello Paul,
Your time and input hear is appreciated. How long do you pause after you perform an effect to allow it to sink into the minds and emotions of the spectator? Often times magicians perform an effect, the climax is realized, and they are off to the next miracle. I suppose it depends on the structure of the performance and the effect in particular, but do you feel some performances are rushed and cheat the audience from a greater experience? Thanks, David Paul

David Paul,
As a general rule I think all of us can go a little slower than what we're comfortable with. Part of this is that we are practicing by ourselves for so long, then we get in front of our audience and what's happening is that two different meters start. One, your internal clock and two, the clock of the watching spectators. They are different because you know what you are doing and what's happening next, thus it's click track is faster. The spectators are moving at a slower meter as they are evaluating and taking in what is being presented. It's always good to experiment with the beats, find where to put the emphasis, and when to hold or push forward. Remember: it's all a big experiment! Thanks for showing up, too. Best, V |

Great question.
Listened to David Berglas on magic news wire and, he said that tricks are diminished by 50% if you start your next piece straight after the previous one. |

SJ,
His book is one of my all time favs, "The Mind & Magic of David Berglas." I know this thing has been out of print for quite some time, but if any of you have a chance to peruse this do not pass up the opportunity. When I first read it I couldn't stop thinking to myself, "You have dreamed too small." What an eye opener. Wherever you are, Mr. Berglas, thank you for making magic great. Shouts, V |
