Hi Paul,
Glad you are here and I would like to thank you for the profound influence you have had on shaping my performance. As I am South African my experience of your performance is limited to the few clips on you tube and any extra thinking I can pick up from your wonderful manuscripts. I would like to ask you what the 3 main key areas are that you focus on when constructing or performing an effect. I notice that you focus on minimal handling. A simple cut as a control...an after thought as you place the cards in your hand when suspicion has evaporated for example. I also notice that your effects are communicated cleary through presentation, using a metaphor or simple phrases in a direct a manner as possible: you don’t let words cloud your presentation. Is this true for all your effects or is it based on performing conditions. Also do you think that selection of material is a crucial part to being a congruent performer, as I notice your effects all embody a certain essence or purity. Does this spring from your character. Kind Regards, Kyle |

Kyle,
Three main areas: 1. Effect 2. Design 3. Patter. Yes, selection of material is crucial. All the things you do should be helping to define you, not the other way around. Best, V |

Hey Paul,
Thanks for the reply... I am aware of the basic components of a magical effect... that’s 101 stuff. I was hoping for deeper theoretical insights... some golden nuggets. However it then dawned on me that these are a performers personal and best kept secrets. And the essence and purity of an artist is discovered through much thought and study as well as performing experience. Another time maybe.. I think you on to me so Ill just be really honest... I wanted one of the free manuscripts... I have Diplopia and Sympathy for the Devils Cards... Whats the other one called again? Once again thank you for taking magic seriously and leading by example. Kind Regards, Kyle |

Lol.. Thanks Paul you are legend! These type of theoretical discussion are best kept for long meetings and plenty of coffee... I find that generally most shy away from this type in the online forum... I think it's because it requires extensive typing!!
At the moment I'm studying the works of Paul Brook, Rick Maue, Derren Brown and Darwin Ortiz Strong Magic is always good for reference. One book I find incredible and truly love browsing over and over is Jay Sankeys Beyond Secrets- it definielty get the thought process flowing. Also Some Influence and Pyscholiogcal Persuasion material to help better structure, suggest, frame and lead. One aspect I am yet to get my hands on is any good books on the theatre and acting. I have Magic and Showmanship but I¡¦m looking for a more detailed insight into those areas from that specific profession. Any recommendations? Ciao, and thanks again. K |
