Hey guys, I'm looking to add a moving hole type effect to my act. What are your options on the best ones out there and why? Thanks.

You can't go wrong with Michael Close's Pot Hole Trick in his Workers Number 1. Close says it is one of his strongest effects he has ever performed. And having seen him do it, I can see why.

Another one using business cards is Alex Elmsley's Puncture in The Collected Works of Alex Elmsley. I like it for the sneaky, simple yet very effective subtlety used to do the "dirty work."

In both cases you get to hand out your business card to the spectator with the newly moved hole. But I think Close's is better due to the personalization for the spectator built into the routine.

Mike Powers has some nice work on this if you can track down his books.

The Close trick is very good, as are Mike Powers' playing card versions. More recently David Forrest has originated some nice ideas, with a larger hole moving from one card to another. The first "Nothing in Transit" is quite ingenious and is marketed on it's own but a further very simple idea (and a quickie)is "Void Voyage" which appears on volume 2 of "The Forrest Francis Project" DVD's. At some point I'll be using that myself.

We shouldn't forget that Sankey's clever twist on 'wild card' "Target Practice" is also a moving hole trick, and was great thinking on Jay's part. As was the idea of moving a hole in a key,"Key Deposit" available from Elmwood Magic.

The early Tenyo moving hole trick was good but has been off the market for years.

Why are they good? They all just seem so ***ed impossible. The Close and Sankey routines (Pothole Trick and Target Practice) have more possibilities for humor but the Close routine is a little lengthy before anything magical happens. The premise is great though.

Couldn't agree more - this effect is genius. I'm very surprised more people don't rave about it.

Yeah, I forgot about Target Practice! Great effect open to many possible patter variations.

Is target practise the one he does with a hole punch ? And then you actually watch the hole move ? I have seen jay do that effect but never got the name. Just wondering if that is the one you guys have been talking about.

R. Paul wilson has an effect on his "Knock 'em dead" dvd called unholy gathering. Matrix effect with a selected card signed by spectator. I can't say it's the best because I don't really know any others, and just found out about it recently. I haven't purchased the dvd yet to give you any feedback, but thought I would add it to the list Smile

Did Mike Powers put his trick in his book "Power Plays"?

An incredibly visual variation of the moving hole plot is offered up by Peter Pelikaan, in a packet trick he aptly calls "Hole." Looks like trick photography--but it isn't.
