I am wanting to put together a parlor show for teens and up. I was wondering if you could suggest your top three favorite effects for this.
Mine would be: Lucky Lady by Ton Onasaka Signature Cardiographic by Martin Lewis Smartass by Bill Abbott

Anything that works for adults will work for teens, but with teens the tricks need to be very fast paced. Teens unlike adults will not give you a second chance, and if they like you they won't be too shy to cheer for you.

I'm not familar with the tricks that you do, but I would make my first trick my most powerful effect, just to get their undevided attention, because they will not give you a second chance.

Anything will work Paul but it has nothing to do with the trick.
It has to do with you being confident, skilled, and very entertaining. Any trick will work at all. ESPECIALLY those NOT sold as comedy magic tricks "with hilarious patter included". "Hilarious patter included" usually means it will be perfect for an old-folks home but that's about it. Look to the classics and make them entertaining.

I would recommend tricks where everything can be examined first. Teens are very 'touchy' with props and question everything. Personally I would do strong close-up like:
Elastic Bands (Crazy Man's handcuffs) Card tricks (ambitious, card to mouth etc.) Rope tricks (Professors Nightmare, Acrobatic Knots) Money Tricks Avoid cut and restored rope, it won't work. But do use your arm / head chopper, spike through hand and tricks that imply danger. If your confident with your magically skill, use gambling tricks and say, if you catch me doing it, you win $20. Put $100 on the table and take $20 back each time you fool them. It really gets them interested and gives them a goal with the idea of winning money. It will help keep them focused on you throughout the entire show. But you have to fool them, or it will cost you! Steve |

Include them in the routines (interactive!) I perform cut and restored rope, works for me.
I even use the POM POM stick for teens. They are like a horse, if they know you are frightened of them they will buck you. j |

Cut and restored rope is a staple for me, for teens.
The magic is beautiful, there are nice sucker feints you can incorporate into the routine to lure cocky teens. Great comedy potential for miles. It's a whole bunch of fun.

Silk in Balloon goes over very well. I do it as a comedy routine and give my helper the balloon and silk as a memento.
20th Century Silks. Again a comedy routine. Mouth Coils,Dream queen,Cardtoon.Bobos Prestidigitating Halves,Professor's Nightmare,Cups or Chop Cup,Billiard Balls,Sponge Stuff,Sketch-o-matic,T.T.stuff,Book test or nail writer effects. Just think a little you can come up with tons. Cater to who you are hired for. If they really want you there for the kids be silly like you would with teens. Shoot jokes over their heads for the adults. I have done many mixed shows and they are always the most fun in the end. T,V. Card Frame is good too. Hope this helped. |

Paul,
What tricks have you done for years that you enjoy doing and you've honed to perfection??? What's on your current list?

Frank,
I have a kid's show with things such as PB&J, Snakeless Snake Cans, No Tear Newspaper Tear, Stratosphere, Fraidy Cat Rabbit. (to name a few) Most of these are just too childish to convert to a routine for adults. That is why I am looking for routines that would work well for older kids and adults.

In case you havent noticed everybody here is carefully avoiding selecting the tricks that are best for you. Surely you are able to take the hint, and make the final decisions yourself. The other possibility is that you might not be prepared to entertain teens, and if that is the case you should turn down the job. It appears that none of us have given you any of the kind of help that you are looking for. GOOD LUCK

Al,
What I was hoping for was a flood of effects that people find effective in a parlor venue so that I might be able to research and select the effects that would be best be suited for me. I certainly am able to entertain teens, I do it regularly in walk around at the restaurants I work. I just am not that knowledgeable in parlor effects for adults. What I am really trying to do is build a show for children 10 and up. I think (and many Café members have said this too) that any material you do for 10 and up is the same material you would perform for adults. I was looking for suggestions for routines that play well in parlor so I might have some effects to research and build a show. I thought it might be easier to start my research for building a show with some suggestions from my fellow Café members. if you all are not comfortable making suggestions then I completely understand. Just to be clear, I haven't booked a show for teens I am wanting to begin writing/building a show so that if I am hired for one I will be prepared.

Paul, I think the newspaper tear that you do would work very well with maybe a different patter if your using it for younger kids right now?
Linking Rings come to mind also Let me know what you come up with Don |

I had to say that. You can do card tricks, or rope tricks for teens. They have always worked for me, but above all NEVER LET THEM SEE YOU SWEAT.
