I would have posted before but didn't remember the name: the roughing stick is made of Rosin which is obviously available also in white. Jan

That was my guess, too, that it is colophon or rosin but from the video the color looks very different. I have never seen such a colored violin rosin. Typically violin rosin has some other components mixed in. Perhaps the roughing stick has some other special ingredients besides the rosin.

Wow, 900+ posts and this is my first EVER in "Gaffed and Funk". Fun section of the Café!! I guess the 3 1/2 of Clubs bit kind of turned me off. gaffed Inner circle So far I've managed to gimmick 1817 Posts |
I just happen to find the need to rough a few cards myself for an effect that I'm using with Multi Dimensional.
I used to make gaffed cards professionally years ago but no longer do so. I have no idea what a roughing stick is, and this is the first time I've heard of it, but I don't believe I would ever attempt to use it. Many years ago they had a roughing liquid as that is all there was. It was applied with a cotton ball, was very difficult to use and, in my opinion, very unreliable. They then came out with a commercial roughing spray, but now it is just Testors Dullcote (flat clear lacquer). Over the years I've roughed more cards than you would believe, and I have a lot of experience with doing it. By FAR, the best is good old Testors Dullcote if applied correctly. I've heard of people complaining about the colors on the card running or bleeding, but this is totally avoidable. First, give a very light coat and let dry (of course, keep the card laying FLAT when applying!). Then give a second coat, and you're all set to go. I heard someone mention on another thread that making an Invisible Deck is cheaper and easier...NO WAY!! The ONLY reason for possibly making your own Invisible Deck could in ANY way be justified is if you wish to use a special type of deck other than Bicycle. Other than that....BUY them! Less fuss, money (no, it is NOT cheaper!), trouble, mess, fumes, etc., etc.

For those who can't find the Krylon Matte Finish 1311 at your discount retailer...look for Rust-oleum Painters Touch Matte Clear. Spray your cards on the back porch on a windless night as the fumes are brutal. They will dry quite quickly but it odor will remain on the cards for a few days. You can custom spray your cards so they have the right "feel" for the way you work.
