Hello guys,
I do notice sometimes that even professonal magicians have their hands shaking as they perform close up or to certain audiance... at the end of the day, magicians are humans and even the best sometimes gets nervous...there could be lots of reasons for that...from my experience, it happens as I start a performance and gets the adrenaline rush thru my body. now I know there are ways to control that, but my question is if you have seen close up a celebrity magician hands shaking as he starts a performance and what was your reaction??? no need to name the magician plz, its the experience I m refering to here thanks |

Depends on the age and health of the performer. Sometimes the shakes is a result of old age or health condition.
If it is nervousness, that comes across in additional ways - voice, other body language, eyes, ect...

I get round it by explaining to spectators that I do most of my rehearsing during winter

LOL Ade2010 and hows that been working for you?
This is a really good post here cause I can relate to this when I first started out and I'm sure others as well. We all at one time or another go threw this. I decided to post here today though cause I wanted to share a story that just happen this past month, now we said no mention of names so lets just say John is his name.I was hanging out at the local magic shop after picking up some supplies and this "JOHN" walks in. Johns a very familiar face in the magic community lets say. Well John decides to try out this new effect hes been working on for us all and before he even starts he's shaking like crazy. I mean really bad too, he can't even hold the cards in his hands, its that bad. Now this is a guy that's held more awards then myself and everyone in there together, and hes nervous. WOW. So heres what I decided to do before I see him mess this up for the younger guys that are in watching as well. I scream... and I mean scream... lol...i think he nearly #### himself if you know what I mean. I placed my hand on his shoulder and said hey, if I'm making you nervous I can go stand over there if you like... he looks at me and laughs...and I said start again now. Now not a move executed then after did he even shake. Its funny when we get so pumped up that our body does this to us. So that's my most recent experience I wanted to share. Enjoy. Rick Anderson
Grew up near one of the greatest minds in magic the late Stewart James, in a town called Wallaceburg just 15 mins from Courtright where James could be found, time and time again he would inspire me to always be creative and just love all magic.

Being talented and being comfortable on stage is two different things.
Fear can be ego based. They have to like me or I am not worthy. In my younger days, it was all about me. These days it is about them and us. In the music world, there are great technicians that will blow your socks off in a one to one sharing...but even in a jam..or getting up in front of others... like a deer in the proverbial headlikes... Be safe, well and creative. Nearly Normal tip..don't use booze or street drugs to calm it down... Harris

I normally pray that they don't mess up the trick haha.
Anyway, just being curious, how did you guys handled the awkward moments when you found your hands shaking involuntarily?

Mmread is right about age being a factor, too.
I've watched a guy I've known for years (very well known in this area) have his hands start to shake, and even drop some small items, when he tried to do a casual "move" that would've been completely clean some time back. My reaction: "In ten years I don't want that to be me!" For myself, a few deep breaths and a sip of water help a lot. If the adrenalin is really bad (rarely), I'll take a moment before hand to do a full body "clench" (tighten every muscle you can think of and hold it for a few seconds). Burns a ton of hormones! Sometimes when I’m playing keyboard, especially between songs, I’ll accidentally drop my hand on a key, making an unfortunate noise. I’ll then use the other hand to “slap” the back of the offending hand. It serves to acknowledge that “yep, I screwed up” and makes the singers and other musicians laugh as well. This could work at the close up table too, I think. On the "drug" idea, I have tried chamomile tea once or twice, with indeterminate results.
...what if I could read your mind?

I get shaky hands out of nowhere every so often. It's a result of an anxiety condition. You never know what kind of medical or psychiatric conditions a performer may have. My occasional shakiness is a direct result of this anxiety condition, and not any specific trigger (including performing). It happens when I'm not performing as well. I've had magicians ask me about it because they were so surprised to see that I was "nervous," since they knew how "confident a performer I normally am." It's unfortunate and often hard to explain that it had nothing to do with being nervous, but I just play through it.
Something to consider. |
