I had a lengthy e-mail discussion with Ammar the week before the show. He knew I had just re-issued the Coin in Balloon DVD (2008) and the old book "Best Dam Tricks"(1980) of mine had methods for putting larger objects in the balloon. I almost got him to do the coin in balloon, I also had the Jumbo Coin in balloon that uses the identical method as the cell phone.
He opted for the cell phone as it was an every day object. Other objects, bicycle deck, jumbo coin, DVD, borrowed wallet and more. I was originally upset with this effect, as I was the only one to use the reverse dam method (with a coin). It kind of stole my thunder.

You would have to do more than just rip the balloon neck. You will also have to rip through the bottom part of the balloon as well. Otherwise when you rip the balloon neck off you expose the fact that the object is under the balloon and not inside it. But hey, if you get tremendous reactions doing it that way, all the best with it.

I use this effect both close-up and on stage and it always kills. I find that if you bite down through two layers rather one, you can expose the phone within the balloon immediately, thereby selling the belief that the phone is actually inside of the balloon rather than wrapped up in a rubber layer inside of the balloon? Sabe?

Magicreviews thanks for sharing your handling, but you are very close to exposure.

Unless of course he was referring to possibly biting into the balloon to get the tear started, but then again what would be the motivation, and or reasoning for biting into the balloon after the balloon is deflated in the mind(s) of the spectator(s)? I thought once the balloon is deflated that’s it....your done....finished....!

I'm not ashamed to say I was fooled by MA on Letterman when I saw this. Watched it twice, still couldn't figure it out. Thanks to you guys and your discussion, I now know how it works. What does this tell us? Even magicians are fooled (and I know my stuff) and everyone should be more careful when discussing tricks in the forums...
Cheers, Chris

For people who still regularly use this effect, what size balloon would you recommend now that a lot of phones are so large? I'm struggling to get it to work 100% of the time using regular party balloons at the moment.

I find that if you blow the balloon up bigger it should solve the issue - not a bigger balloon per se. Placement is also important - the bigger phones really aren't the issue in my opinion.
