I've been asked to perform an escape trick for about 100 4th and 5th graders at my church that will be applied to a Bible story. The only one that I know is a comedy thumbcuff escape routine. I'm worried that is too small for platform/stage. Any suggestions on routines that would be good for that age group/setting?

I've never done the 100ft. rope escape myself, but the principles are very simple and I've been told that it's very easy to do. It palys big.
I've seen siberian chain escape and the kellar tie done well, but usually through a comedy presentation. I suppose that wouldn't work for your story.

The one where the ropes pass through the jacket sleeves and tie around the person in the jacket looks good.
Maybe a tie in where ropes were strong enough to tie thieves to the cross but not Jesus. Let the ropes represent the every day bonds to sin that can be broken with the Lord's help. Just some "gospel-like" ideas.

I forgot I have Escapology with Dixie Dooley. I'm thinking his German Transport Escape will work fine. But I'm still interested in what others may suggest.

Apparently, this is also known as the Siberian Chain Escape.

If you have escapology the keller rope tie is great and simple and can be played up with a bit of comedy too.
as for a biblical application you can talk about how satan is the father of lies and he uses these lies to trick us and get us all tied up. this is while you are getting tied up by a volunteer then as you hold your hands below the cloth they are holding you immeadiatly bring your one hand out so that they can see it is FREE maybe gesture twords the audience quoting a scripture verse maybe soem thing from proverbs. then show y ou are tied up again. you can do this 3 times before you escape completely you get the idea you need to look up some verses to go with it but I can tell you that this goes over well with this age group as I have done this for years with them. h ave fun sam ps the 100' rope escape is also great.

The Bible story is from Acts 12 when an angel frees Peter from prison. His chains fall off. I guess I should've mentioned that part. So I was trying to stick with a chain escape.
Sam - Is the Keller Rope Tie then one where he sits in the chair with the rope around his knees and his hands on top? |

The "In Again - Out Again" rope tie used by the Wiz Kids on their Rope DVD ( http://wizkidzinc.com/DVDs/rope01/wizkidsROPE01.htm ) can be performed with a chain, providing you can find a smooth chain that won't cut you to ribbons. You may already know the method since it is an escape where you sit in a chair with the rope/chain around your knees and your hands on top. Instead of tying, for a chain you would use a padlock. You can get nice heavy and smooth chains from Home Depot that would work well for this as a chain escape.
This is NOT the Kellar Rope Tie. The effect for the Kellar Tie is as follows: EFFECT– The center of a piece of rope several feet in length is tied around the left wrist by spectators; then the hands are brought behind the back, the right wrist placed against the knot on the left wrist, and the rope tied around the right with several hard knots. When all are convinced the tying is secure, the performer suddenly releases his right hand and waves it about over his head, then replacing it behind his back he wheels around and shows that he is firmly tied again. Finally, the performer releases himself entirely from the rope, which he lays aside.

The German Transport Escape also can be done on an in/out principle which made it stick out to me. The escape I referred to before was called the Spirit Rope Tie, 3rd effect on DVD 1. I'll scan the other DVD's for the Keller.

What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

Bob - I didn't want to cross-post the same subject even though I think it is warranted (because isn't that against the rules?). I felt like I needed feedback from the kid performers who have done escape tricks before getting advice from escape artists who have performed for kids.

Thumb cuffs can (and do) play for larger audiences.
Strait jacket routines have also been used for my audiences.(in and out of church groups.)

I've always wanted to do a straight jacket routine, but being 6'2" and over 300 pounds has always been a hindrance. I don't think they make XXXL straight jackets!

They do make Jackets that large, you just might have to custom order them. Check Cannons Great Escapes or with Pastor Clyde.

Well that's good info for later. Not sure I wanna shell out the cash for a custom job though. It's worth investigating though.

I have used Peter Loughran's The Iron Garrote for kids believe it or not! Not around the child's neck of course but as an escape with Houdini patter. It is the perfect size to fit around a child's waist with two children pulling from either side. The chain will seem to pass through the child and "fall off" as in the bible story you are talking about. http://www.masterofillusions.ca/master_o......rote.htm
