Does anyone do patriotic shows? When do you market them? What effects would you suggest? Thanks.
Jim

I've never done a strictly patriotic/flag show. About the only thing I have that would qualify for that type of show would be the Mis-made American Flag routine with a Change Bag.

In my opinion a Patriotic theme would go best at an outdoor event during the months of June, July, and August. I also think that you should finish with a long flag banner. I like the chrystal tube/mis made flag combo always goes over well, and it has lots of layers to it. Did you buy one of those red, white, and blue sequened vests? I like the top hat with the elastic sequened hat band too.

The only time I have marketed a patriotic show was when I was doing daycare shows, and they always wanted it during the month of July and sometimes the last week of June. When I have a festival show during that time frame, I'll put one or 2 patriotic effects in, but I don't advertise the show as being a patriotic show.

Thank you, gentlemen. I was thinking of marketing it to preschools.
Thanks, Al, for the routine ideas! Any other suggestions of routines would be most welcomed. Jim

Wiz Kid Eleazar (aka Ee-Gee-Fiki these days) has an "Uncle Sam" paper hat tear in his book "Tear-Able Magic" on my site.
Wiz Kid Qua-Fiki found some red, white and blue patriotic tennis balls that he uses for juggling in parades. He found them in a pet shop, of all places! He also does the "Stratospheres" effect with a red, white and blue pit ball instead of the usual red, yellow and green, and at the end, the small pit balls transform into a large red-white-blue patriotic beach ball. The kid is clever. He's not ready to release that one just yet so you'll have to work it out for yourselves. For mis-made flag, the kids have started using Fred Johansen's "Mongolian Silk Mystery" as their method of choice (it's on my site in the Mini-Mysteries Section). You can do the entire mis-made flag routine and after producing the final flag and putting it on display, they produce a long (15 foot) varigated red, white and blue streamer that stretches across the stage (as in Duke's Dye-Version, but using the method described in the Mongolian Silk Mystery). We had to dye the streamer ourselves since we couldn't find a commercial one in red, white and blue. You could also sew silk flags to a red or blue silk ribbon and use that as a streamer. When I was actively performing, I never had to advertise a theme to my shows. My customers got used to the idea that at Halloween I would have a Halloween themed show, and at Christmas, one themed for that holiday, as well as a patriotic show from Memorial Day to Labor Day. I'm not sure a theme is a customer's first concern when they are simply looking for a "magic show." Just make sure that every show you do is filled with magic and entertainment, and automatically adjust the themes for the season. I almost forgot to mention Qua-Fiki's "Blendo Ropes" from The Wizards' Journal #16 is a complete rope routine with a red, white and blue rope. He does it all year long and doesn't make a big deal out of the patriotic colors, so that's probably why I forgot about it.

Here is an older post:
Here's a routine I used in the past: I was asked to do the opening flag ceremony at the Cub Scout Pack meeting and given a Cub Scout Script to which we had to light candles and use patriotic words. Not magic at all, and I didn’t like the idea of given 8-year olds matches but I really liked the script. I modernized the old scout script slightly and I used Silk Scarfs and a change bag instead of candles and matches. (In the background, subtlely, at a very low volume was the Star-Spangle banner music being played on a remote controlled bomb-box setting the mood.) Here’s the script: Scout 1: The blue of my flag is for truth and justice, like the eternal blue of the star-filled heavens. (He puts the blue silk in the change bag.) Scout 2: The white of my Flag is for purity, cleanness of purpose, thought, word, and deed. (He puts the white silk in the change bag.) Scout 3: The red of my flag is the lifeblood of the brave men and women, ready to die, or fight to live, for this our country. (He puts the red silk in the change bag.) Scout 4: (Holding change bag.) Scout 1 and 2 reach into the change bag and pull out the American flag silk by appropriate ends displaying a 36 inch American Flag as Scout No. 4 says: My flag - The flag of America, home of liberty, land of opportunity, where people of all races and creed, live in peace and friendship together. Scout 3: Annouces please join us in saying the pledge of allegiance... In light of recent events (Sept 11th) this went over extremely well. It was not played up as a magic trick, nor did most realize a trick was going to be performed. The flag surprize came as a shock, The "wonderment wow" effect and words of "Did you see that!" floated around the room. (Presentation is the key to a successful effect.) The Cub Scouts got a loud round of applause for that opening. The routine played very well. This routine is free for the taking, I liked the words so well, I am going to use them with my Flag Blendo trick at the Blue and Gold Banquet, and in my shows. I realize, the use of the American Flag brings added applause. In light of recent events, it is a great addition to add patroitism to one’s show. A reminder that magicians are human and empathic to our nation in need to deal with the present situation. This routine can be easily converted to a Patriotic Routine I also do this with Rainbow Ropes, and Bob Sanders, three Silk Production, where I produce the American Flag (Flag Staff).

I have been performing themed day care shows for 10 years now & I have a Stars N Stripes show and it sells very well at the end of June & in July (as you can imagine) and sometimes I use it around Memorial Day or Presidents Day. I find that day care directors are very happy to find entertainment which fits into the Independence Day theme.
I have been using a prop based partially off of the Tommy's Ties effect for years & now sell this trick under the Giggle Magic name - http://www.gigglemagicstore.com - The trick has changeable ties, so it can be used in a patriotic theme or it can be in non-patriotic shows. I use it all the time - at birthday parties and library shows and in my Summer Fun show. Besides the tie effect, it also has a funny twist - which is great for young audiences. ~Marcy |

Of course, I would champion a Red, White, and Blue Patriotic show. I was raised as a cowboy, served in the U.S. Navy, and ran for statewide elected office. Not only is there no reason to apologize, there are many useful purposes for these shows. (You know that you are invited to the Magicians' Flea Market 911 at the ranch. It's free! Expect to see plenty of Red, White and Blue and fun with other magicians.)
If nothing else, remember that people are still essentially social animals that honor group affiliations. Our team is Red, White and Blue. Magic is visual and the flag is easily recognized. (KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid!) In addition to the scheduled holidays for a Red, White, and Blue Patriotic show is the fact that this is a critical election year. For many people young and old, exciting things (ball games, concerts, races, etc.) begin with Red, White, and Blue. Start with winning and keep it up! MisMade Flag is an excellent choice. Things go wrong but we live in a system that can correct things when they go wrong. It is both a teachable moment and a chance to succeed from failure. The audience is the hero. How can you beat that? Bob Sanders Magic By Sander PS --- This old Marketing professor also reminds you that adults book the show. |

I have never done a complete show themed entirely around patriotism, but I do have several patriotic routines that I do within the boundries of my shows. Besides the ones already mentioned I also like the appearing flagpole with the U.S flag.
Richard mentioned Bob Sanders', "Three Silk Production". Can someone please tell me what a little more about what this is? I have never seen or heard of it. I thought I was aware of everything Bob sold catalog.....and I thought I owned most of it too! :) Regan

Regan,
What flag pole production do you recommend? Thanks. Also, what about the Lincoln drawing board routine? Is that about reading or history of the US? Jim

There are several Presidential Portraits in the "Phantom Artist" collection. The effect is that someone chooses a US President (sorry...I only have templates for US Presidents, not those of other countries) and tears off a sheet of paper from a newsprint pad (any paper will work). You then appear to go into a trance and begin folding up the paper and snipping away at it with scissors. When you "wake up" you unfold the paper to reveal the chosen president's portrait has been clipped into the paper. The clipping makes a great souvenir. There are two locations on my site for forcing the President: The "OM Billet Box Revisited" in my Mini-Mysteries section, and "Force Field" from The Wizards' Journal #18. Currently I have templates available for Washington, Lincoln, and Obama.

I have heard that Mikame makes a nice one, but I have never seen one for real. It's pretty expensive, so I imagine it should be well-made. I don't think the Mikame comes with a U.S. flag either, so that would add to the cost. Regan

I borrow heavily from Silly Billy's Mismade Flag routine featuring "Abraham Lincoln" as my helper. A black balloon can easily be made into a beard and there is plenty of by-play with the top hat falling down over the helper's head a few times before we get to the change bag business.
A friend also gave me a box that has two flaps that come down to show the box empty (sorry, I forgot the official name of it). I place the flag that I just made into the box, do a magic pass, and "Abe" pulls out a much larger flag. Meanwhile, I've got patriotic music going in the background as the large flag is revealed. |
