Hello there.
I'm starting the path of hypnosis right now, to increment my magic performances. I'm a card magician, and though it would be a nice add. Anyway, I've reached a dilemma. To hypnotize someone you DO, of course, need to show confidence, etc, etc. That's something easy for you to do with people you don't know well, because...well, they don't know you, so they don't know in which level of knowledge you are. But when it comes to my friends, that have seen me developing my skills, cardistry mainly, they have never seen me talking about hypnosis. So I now ain't sure if it's going to be easy to ensure they see confidence on me, because you guys know how friends are, always mocking you. ;D Anyway, I don't know if I made myself clear, but I'd like some opinions on the matter. Thank you guys! |

I'm not one of the great hypnotists posting in this forum (people like Danny, Brian,Anthony, Richard, etc.) but in my opinion you have some pros and some cons ahead of you.
Pros - Since they are friends you can train your skills without stress and fear of failing and you can also ask them to have patience as you try and try everything you need to improve on them. Cons - As yourself said, they won't probably be "sold" in the slightest about your newly found "skills" or "powers" and the more they know you, the less the expectancy factor and their imagination will light up their neurons in your favor. However, that does not mean you shouldn't try with friends. When I was in my teens, I tried on a lot of friends, at first with mixed results, but then my scores improved dramatically (and of course it had to do with me and with my increasing self-confidence rather than with them "really" being easier and easier to hypnotize). My two hypnotic cents.
Then you'll rise right before my eyes, on wings that fill the sky, like a phoenix rising!

Hi Pedro,
I doubt this is a help, but I too have had similar fears! Like you I want to add hypnosis to my magic (card guy as well) but lack the confidence to try hypnosis on my friends for exactly the same reasons as you. However, at the same time trying these techniques on complete strangers and them failing isn't very appealing either. It has made me realise that I need to attend a hynosis course that will give me the confidence in my ability. These courses don't come cheap but I think it will be the only way that I will take the plunge...Having said all this if you have seen the Machurian Approach Anthony does provide some "set pieces" which are bound to work, and these could be used to build up confidence. In a card trick with "outs" we know they can't fail, and Anthony's "set pieces" are similar to this. Do you have Anthony's dvd? If not then I highly recommend it. If I go on a hypnosis course it will probably be one of his. |

Yup, attend a Course. It will give you and everybody else CONFIDENCE IN YOUR ABILITY.

I agree that attending a course will give you everything you need: Info, Practise and victims err I mean subjects.
If not, why not lie to your old friends and tell them that you have attended a comprehensive course and have been trained to do it. In fact telling them about this fake course should raise their interest to the point of asking you for a demo, so all the hard work will be done. They will be interested, want to take part and believe that you can now do something that they would have doubted you could do before. But really, if you can afford it, go on a course and then you will be able to say the same without the need to lie. Plus getting the correct practise and guidance.

Do all that was suggested: train with some hypnotist live and use friends to perfect yourself :

Pedro - I´m in the same boat. Everything I´ve read seems to point in the direction of "Acting" like you´re 100% confident in your own abilities, until you actually are. This isn´t something I´m particularly good at so I think I´ll attend some training when I get a chance.
The only alternative I can think of is trying to find a hypnotist that will hypnotise you so that you are confident when hypnotising?

Another approach I prefer is to forget about yourself. Do it in the spirit of adventure and experimentation. Try and hypnotise yourself. At the start I spent a lot of time hypnotising myself. Getting my arm to go rigid and rise. Shutting my own eyelids. Taling myself in trance and giving myself suggestions that my conscious mind would switch of completely and I would respond to music et etc etc...
I had some weird experiences. When hypnotizing friends approach it the same way. There is no hypnotist just the hypnosis. Treat it as a bit of fun and experimentation. Being the hypnotsit with friends sets up a confrontation challenge type of situation. (you can't hypnotize me. Ask them if they will take part in some "experiments". If they agree you should have little or no resistance. There is no hypnotist only the hypnosis which is happening all around us all the time. |

"A prophet is never welcome in his own hometown" really seems to apply to those learning hypnosis. The issue is not that they cannot be hypnotized by you, but that they do not see you in the "role" of hypnotists. This can be overcome if you have the right personality, pre-talk and forum. But generally most find it difficult. I have success with only less than half my family, my girlfriend who makes a great subject at others shows won;t even let me practice with her, she laughs at me....
One of m sons is a great subject and responds well to me, the other wouldn't let me hypnotize him if his life depended on it... My Aunt will, my mom NEVER.... Most of my current friends have only known me as a hypnotist so that is the role they ascribe to me, but if I were to go to my high school reunion and do a show I would probaly would have a hard time.... Confidence is the real issue with friends and family... A great video with crazy hair that day... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pl6tBiv2oJI

If someone of Mr. Nongard's caliber has a problem with this issue, then I guess we just have to accept it as inescapable...
Mindpunisher's advise is very good though. There is no Hypnotist, just the Hypnosis.

Seriously I don't think confedence is the issue. It's geting them engaged. Asking them for help and NOT trying to be the expert is the key when you are starting out with friends or family. Treat it as an experiment then there is no pressure on you or them to "perform". And remember its a numbers game especially at the start. And its more useful getting them motivated to try it out than convincing them "you are the hypnotist". |

I was agreeing with you, mindpunisher.
By inescapable, I meant that it is inescapable that you would encounter this issue with relatives and old friends... Since even the Pros face it. However... Your recommendation as to what to do then would remedy it. Or at least make it much less difficult.

Thank you guys, you were all very helpful!
As the attending hypnosis courses, or finding someone to teach me personally, I guess that won't work. I live in Brazil, a pretty big country. Also, I live in Brasilia, Brazil's capital. "Wow, big city then" one would say. Well, it ain't small at all... but there's an outstanding lack of magic business around here, SPECIALLY hypnosis. In the Magician's International Day, we tried to gather all the magicians we could, from all over the city, and only about 20 showed up. Yeah. And none of them, as I can remember, was any good with hypnosis. So I'm REALLY having to be on my own on this. I guess that's another reason it's hard to get started. In Brazil we have a culture that: 1 - Does not hear or care about hypnosis at all. I mean, really, at all. 2 - Teaches that hypnosis is fake, all of it. So, since I first posted here, I tried to hypnotize this friend of mine, with whom I've always practiced my card tricks. She was impossible to handle. She kept laughing, as if what was going on is ridiculous, and I didn't even try anything outstandingly weird. I swear to you guys, she couldn't focus at ALL even in Anthony DVD's magnetic fingers. And that's because, as I said, people don't even think about it seriously. An international example would be imagining Barney, that purple dinosaur (?) representing some country in a UN conference. NO ONE would take it seriously. I really talked a lot, and said little, but this was more about letting feelings out. Anyway, I'll try with other friends, maybe some friends I'm not THAT close with 8). Oh, also, about the "lying to them" option... well, I'm already putting that in action. Once again, thanks guys! |

Pedro - Do you think it would make any difference with that friend of yours if you weren´t facing her? Perhaps her "gidiness" could be reduced if she had her eyes closed?
There´s a "convincer" I´ve come across that involves making someone fall backwards (you stand behind the subject). Here´s a rough break down: * Have the subject stand upright with their eyes closed and position yourself behind them. * You tell them that they can feel a force pulling them backwards. * You gently stroke their temples motioning towards yourself (only lightly touching each temple with one finger) as you tell them that the force pulling them backwards is becoming stronger and stronger. if you can start off with a convincer that works, maybe her gidiness could be eliminated? - it´s just a thought. I tried lying once, claiming to be a hypnotist. I had some friends introduce me to their friends as "A Hypnotist" but I didn´t have the confidence to pull it off. The strange thing was, when I did magnetic palms, my FRIENDS were the ones who responded best!

She was really laughing at the 'situation'. I could see that in the magnetic fingers, with her eyes opened, she wasn't imagining anything at all, she was just following what I was saying (not in the hypnosis way, but in the 'i wanna see where this is going' way), so when her fingers were almost closing she was already like "what now?" and I said "when they touch, just let your head fall and take a deep breath", and she immediately sticked her fingers together, threw her head backwards, took a weir breath, came back up and asked "what now?". I gave up at that point. Actually I almost started laughing. You guys have no idea how funny that scene was. Aaaanyway... I'll try it will other people, see what happens. |

If someone laughs - it IS a response. Nothing isn't useful in hypnosis. Let them laugh....and use suggestions like " the more you laugh the more your concentration gets stronger"...
"Would you like to see something really funny?" Stand inside a door. Press your wrists against each side for a few moments. Now see how your arms want to raise? that's really strange and very funny. Now hold your arms out straight cl;ose your eyes. Imagine one getting heavier the funnier it seems the better you are at concentrating.... By getting them to stand inside the door they will experience " arm levitation" of sorts. Next I would take it to a heavy arm then a light arm. One step at a time. You don't have to mention the word hypnosis. |

I have had laughing people too. I use a similar technique to MP: " You are laughing now because your body is starting to drift into a state of relaxation it has not felt in a long time. It is your body and mind wanting to let go. It is perfectly normal that this happens. You may also notice, the more you laugh, the better you feel. The better you feel, the more relaxed you become."-Shane

Some people laugh because they are nervous. Just allow them to laugh for a while until they relax.
